Let's take a ride to the seaside
We can go out swimming in the high tide
Just wear your shorts and your long hair
Don't forget the lawn chair

Everybody's gone to the movies
Everybody's gone and it's groovy
They went to the one about the big war
I didn't, I'd seen it before

I guess I'm taking my chances
Giving up the ring, throwing in the gloves
I guess I'm taking my chances
Trading in my things, for a couple wings, on a little white dove
And one big love, one big love

Everybody do like a monkey
If you want to go on and be funky
No need to talk like a hero
Talk a walk and count down to zero

No sense defending your honour
Just go on and kiss him if you want to
Everything before is gone
Or is going somewhere

I guess I'm taking my chances
Giving up the ring, throwing in the gloves
I guess I'm taking my chances
Trading in my things, for a couple wings, on a little white dove
And one big love, one big love

I don't know where we are and I don't care
And now we're out of gas and riding on air
And one big love, one big love

Everybody run till you're flying
Touch a star without even trying
Everybody's swinging from the big star
Everybody's riding in the cool car

Let's take a ride to the seaside
We can go out swimming in the high tide
Everybody do like a monkey
Everybody go on and be funky
Everybody go on and be funky
Let's take a ride to the seaside

Let's take a ride to the seaside
Let's take a ride to the seaside
Let's take a ride to the seaside

That would be OK by me. Maybe something other than “Mimi on the Beach”, though (or at least not only “Mimi”). It’s great song, but was overplayed back in the day.

Generic like Sheryl crow…
It's always great to hear this song.

I thought this song was Crow until today

Or Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays.

Incredibly sweet voice.
Saw her in concert last night at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. Sat front and center at the edge of the stage. Wow. Had tears streaming down my face when she sang Go Wherever You Wanna Go. She encored with Flaming Red. Lucy Wainwright Roche, daughter of Suzy Roche and Loudon Wainwright opened. Great voice. Sooo glad I went to that gig.
Thanks for playing her RP!!
No sense defending Your Honor, just go on and kiss him if you want to

That's 7 days in jail.

never heard of her, here is hoping RP will play it

That one big love is tangled up in blue while you all just sway and twirl and dance Deadhead style. Yes you are. I see you! Cool song.

This lady is just amazing.

Sa voix ressemble à celle de la chanteuse des Sundays

Such a good track, surprised it never took off back in the day.
Still great 25 years later.
The "little girl" voice comments are kind of ridiculous, she was 34.  A lot of country singers like Dolly Parton have that sound too.
Everybody do like a monkey - I'll second that. Ook! Ook! :o)

Sounds to me like she's at least 25 years old on this recording.  (Math says she 34 or 35.)

And somebody else thinks Sheryl Crow sounds like a little girl?  Y'all should clean the wax outta your ears.
This is a "Summer" song to me...
Just makes you nostalgic and warm,
Youth, remembered....

There's only one person being immature now. Patty Griffin is well respected in the music industry.

Similar little-girl voice as Sheryl Crow

Ha! Exactly. PG is crazy talented and always a pleasure to hear.
Voice is reminiscent of the Sundays' lead singer.

What?  Given the other comments here and hear,  mine among them, your view seems to be in a tiny minority.  Au contraire, Ms. Griffin has one of the most distinctive and enthralling voices to be enjoyed on RP.

Bang on.
Even her happy songs make me cry. Wow

seriously. And no knock on Crow, but Patty is a much better songwriter. I'll take this over Crow's "Soak up the Sun" any day of the week.

Hey, not every song is 'Goodbye' - a tearful tribute to a fallen friend, from the same album.

She could set a grocery list to music, I'd still listen.

I agree with jacopo777, is a little Sheryl Crow - but irritating.  Belt it out? Listen to some Crow man.

I wonder if this was Patty's attempt at a hit single like Crow or Shawn Colvin (who broke through to the masses around this time with "A Few Small Repairs").

She may have little interest in a hit single except that it guarantees future income through royalties and maybe leads to a better contract from the record company.

Thought this was Cheryl until I looked up the RP play stream info

I hear ya...might you be thinking of John Hiatt?  His song "Cry Love" sounds quite a bit like this as does his song with Little Village  "Big Love"....at least that's what popped into my head.  I'm not a musician but all three songs have that groove and chord progression/tome...in my opinion, anyway.

And BTW...I am a Patty Griffin fan as well; no knock on her wonderful song here.

I am singing along and chair dancing twirling and spinning to this like the Deadhead I am. Love her!
Love me some Patty Griffin!
Good catch. Show a gal from Maine some respect.

Agreed.  Been nearly 2 decades and I never, ever, ever get tired of this album.  Wonderful change of pace from much of PG's work.  Either way, she can't go wrong.
THAT VOICE IS THE BOMB.
 phlattop wrote:

Well maybe kind of close.  I love and have them both. Ask me to choose one voice over the other and I'll fall into some infinite cognitive loop and freeze up like those androids in the original Star Trek.  I think the production in Emmy Lou's version is better.

The curator is in fine form this evening. That said, Ms Griffin goes with everything.
Love this song! Remember it being a track on the free CD they handed out at Lilith Fair 'back in the day'.  I think I still have that CD somewhere...

All the Deadhead hippie chicks be spinnin' an' twirl dancin' to this. So cool.

Agreed.  There are a couple of jewels on it, but not compared to some of her other albums which are chock full of gems.

TOTALLY disagree! Her best by far. Really soulful rock. Great lyrics and guitar. All the others are too bland. MHO.
LOVE Patty's version over EmmyLou's
Love it!
It's beautiful.
Far from her best. Her best is pretty damn good but this is mediocre. The rhyming is especially forced.

Perfect summer song -- cruisin' along...
Started off sounding like the Sundays and then it got more, er, Griffinny.

Maybe not her "best", she has such a great body of work.

Love this album though, and would like to se another rock album from her.
I don't know if it's her best or not, and I don't much really care.  I do know this lady has a great voice.
Love Patty--but this song, not so much.

Solid song, but more Cheryl Crowesque than Patty Griffin, lyrics, tune, singing style.
I like Patty Griffin but this album and song are not her best IMHO.

Ditto re discovering her here. As for recommendations: just click on "Patty Griffin" in the now-viewing bar to get a list of most of her better output. Personally, my favorites are Change and Mad Mission.
Super tune. I love hearing her with all plugged in and playing loud. Wish she'd do it more.

For Patty Griffin, it's merely okay. Which means it towers over 99% of what passes for popular music these days. We say this is ho-hum because, compared with her other work, it is. But her other work is so incredible, so 'stop what you're doing and just listen' amazing, this suffers by comparison.

Can you tell I'm a fan of Ms. Griffin?

What a happy song.  I love Patty and her work.
150,000% agree.

I *love* "Little God". This is the first concert I went to by myself after my divorce. It was a "I can do this by myself" moment. Very necessary and empowering.

Patty sings beside Robert Plant on his Band of Joy tour and he introduced her as "the best singer in America."   The two of them together were truly amazing.  Listen to this lady.  Robert says so, and I believe.

Wow, I completely agree. When this first came out, I didn't know her music. I thought the song was OK, but nothing great. Then I heard the rest of the album and I'm now in awe of her.

She got great lungs, reminds me of the Sundays

Patty = Gift to humanity {#Bounce}{#Sunny}{#Kiss}

That withdrawn frosty voice is so recognizable. Nice
A fine song, with bang-on lyrics: make love, not aggro. The album's pretty damn good too, the rocky bits at least - I'm not so keen on the country stuff, but I guess she needs to keep her feet in both camps. 7 from the Nottingham jury doing like the monkey. Ook ook!

Man...you guys are tough!  Thank you m'am, may I have another?

Unfortunately, it's a little tricky to get a copy - try the web.
The opening track is "Little God" which plays frequently on RP.

Oh, yes, also contains "Boston" which proves that Patty can rock.

"Mary" off "Flaming Red" is poignant to the point of hearthbreak.
