Well of course they should. Everyone should, really. As often as they can. It's an exercise, a vital exercise for sanity and health. Studies have shown ... that more studies are needed. Notice how studies never reach tests, and tests aren't so much Scantron bubbles as Rohrschach blots, and you don't see as much ice plant around as you did when you were a kid? It crawled over hillsides like an alien thing, verdant and undulant. You used to be the king of comedy. Now you're pushing pizza and oil changes like your life depended on it. And as much as you wish someone would spare you this indignity, that someone isn't anyone who signs checks.And it's a fair step from that spot on the carpet still fainter from the time you threw up your chardonnay to the bank and that fresh humiliation of asking for money that's not long yours. I get it. We all come here for a reason. We all go where and when we will, and that's a wind blowing down a longer hall than any of us can see the end to. But the sky still shares the same rain, and it doesn't matter if you're raising corn or spreading cain. You live in a world that's sung the song of supremacy and solitude and can't quite suss out what's throwing off the choir. So look at the "WRONG WAY" sign from the other side. Find what's common in everything disparate. A thread's thin to hang from but it starts every cord and holds the heart of every note. Poetry is the commonest thing in the world - like diamonds. |
