So what do you think will happen instead?

I'm actually more worried about '25 when ~ 1/2 the people that bothered to vote feel more allegiance to their tribe than to their government.   And I'm curious what the 40% non-voters will do as part of the population whines and refuses to follow the rule of law.

I am afraid that there will be some 9/11 type event, or several of them, but probably bigger, and spread all over, and there will be all kinds of shelter-in-place regulations again....among the 8 or 10 million that have crossed the southern border in the past few years are almost certainly sleeper cells from numerous Sharia fundamentalist countries plus about 5 combat divisions worth of fit, single, fighting age Chinese men...and so the responsible party could be anyone and elections will just be suspended and everyone will have to stay at home again or similar.

The Unaparty is desperate to hold on to power no matter what it takes.

And then yes, I agree with you, half the country is going to get proper, roiling mad at the other half.

i really really hope I am wrong and everyone here can laugh and point fingers etc.
That would be better for us outside of the US in the rest of the world, than the effect of what I worry might happen.

I am quite convinced that for some reason there won't be an election.

According to FiveThirtyEight's congressional vote tracker at ABC News, Phillips voted with President Joe Biden's stated public policy positions 100% of the time,<21> making him more liberal than average in the 117th Congress when predictive scoring (district partisanship and voting record) is used.

And he is Jewish.  That alone may make him unelectable in today's climate and certainly at odds with the progressive branch of the party because of his ethnicity.

But what the hey, the more choices the better.

Still don't know much about him, but to those voters who think "I like what Joe did, but don't want him to run again" he, considered a centrist, may be just the ticket.
To republicans like yourself, well...

i'm super busy with work, so i haven't been giving much attention to the polling
in light of events and the news cycle, i just assumed that people would just re-elect biden/harris
oddly i saw a video by a black influencer speaking about another influencer showing  clips of hip hop/rap artists promoting trump
i admit i was surprised and i'm guessing they can be quite persuasive among the youth following them
i just glanced at some polling over at 538 and see that trump and biden are literally neck and neck
going forward i wonder how much will hinge on trump's legal situation?

John Bolton Announces 2024’s Most Ridiculous Presidential Bid
The two-and-a-half minute GMB clip captures the oddness of his run:
  • Bolton is making this announcement on a television show that doesn’t air in the U.S. (Just consider that for a moment.)
  • He says he’d run “primarily on the basis that we need a much stronger foreign policy.” That feels a little on the nose, as being a warmonger is the only thing Bolton is known for: He has admitted to planning foreign coups on national TV, and he was fired as national security adviser because he kept trying to start wars after promising Trump that he wouldn’t.
  • Bolton suggested that he could beat Trump in 2024, because “Trump’s support within the party itself is in terminal decline.” But Bolton skips over the fact that he  has essentially zero support in the GOP. Beating Trump sounds fine — it’s getting people to vote for Bolton that’s the issue. As GMB interviewer Noel Phillips noted, “His opponents say he lacks in popularity, but a defiant John Bolton is preparing for a fight.”
  • Bolton seems set on alienating British people too. He spent part of the interview defending former U.K. prime minister Liz Truss, who was ousted after 44 days, and her wildly unpopular economic policies.

Just a smokescreen, probably well rewarded in biz-coins.
