Finally got around to putting in the SSD. Wow! First impression is it's worth every nickel. Took 6 hours to do a clone of the old drive to an external (the failsafe backup), then 3 or so hours to do a clone of the old HD to the new SSD, then maybe an hour to actually put it in. While we were taking it apart, the guy whose bench I was using said "I should look thru my box of RAM and see if I have any for that" and sure enough, he had a 4GB and 2GB pair just laying around. I had 2 1GB chips in and the thing can only address 3GB max, so I took them both out and put the 4 & 2 in to see what would happen. It was not happy So I took out the 4, put a 1 back in and it's great. "Only" 3GB RAM in it but that's 50% more than I had this morning, and the big apps will use the SSD as virtual memory which will really speed things up.

I had to backscroll to figure out why this conversation's in this thread. But it is, so hey, sorry.

Congrats, man. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm a hardware fanatic, and build my own machines. (My main rig has 24Gb RAM) Definitely, SSD drives are the key to speed. Make sure to check firmware versions, as well as driver updates. I think MAC does that as a "system upgrade" automatically, so its not as likely to be a pain in the butt as Windows. In any case, hurrah! and happier computing! {#Jump}

Thanks again for the tip, Steve...

I just went shopping for an SSD and found a price on the Samsung 840 Pro that was, at $209, about $20 less than the next lowest price and $40 under most retailers. I was looking around on the site (MacMall) for RAM too and when I came back and added the SSD to the cart, the price jumped to $249! Too slow, Scott, too slow.

I may just do some basic maintenance but I'm going to swap out the hard drive for a SSD soon and do some major housecleaning then; maybe I'll just put up with it. If I want to watch stupid videos I can just launch Safari or FF.

I was just tonight getting a general Website Not Found error... for Google. Google cal wouldn't load even where it was embedded... anyway relaunching Chrome fixed that. I'm sure it's something like that. I'll work on it tomorrow.
