Looking at the rising death totals and explosion of new Covid-19 cases tonight, it is near impossible to take pride in being an American. This is an abomination. Americans pride themselves on being individualistic. There should not be any confusion. We are where we are because of selfishness. No pride in that. Absolutely none. Only shame.
There is such a thing as the irrational belief in American exceptionalism, but there is also another side of the coin to this. Americans are certainly not exceptional, but we are also certainly not inferior and immoral based solely upon our nationality. No one is no matter where they are from. There are plenty of racist, bigots and nationalist all over the world who feel that some are superior and others are inferior based solely on physical characteristics or nationality. Not a club I would want to be a part of. You can be disappointed in idiots and scared, I get that, but methinks you are being a bit dramatic with the anti American self loathing. Want to know what is also irrational? Feeling shame for the actions and behavior of others, an advantage of being individualistic is you are not burdened by such things. Be someone that you will not be ashamed of and you should feel no shame. You cannot and should not try to control others, only show them by example and hope they also take up a path to enlightenment and compassion.
Then, correspondingly, one would not or should not take pride in being an American.
Pride is certainly relative and contextual. However I would say that we could all do with a lot less pride of culture if it is manifest in such a manner as to promote divisiveness. I am neither proud or ashamed to be an American, I just am. As Americans we are much too diverse to be one or the otherand I suppose I am proud of that fact.

it is easy to get down, i know from personal experience
unfortunately the disease is going to run it's course and do what it does
i don't want to sound callous about that, so don't take that the wrong way peeps
some really smart people did some data comparison with europe and estimated a toll of 200k here

Florida has recorded its biggest single-day increase in coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, sending the stock market lower on fears the latest US outbreak could lead to another surge in fatalities.
The total of 120 deaths reported by Florida on Thursday was more than double the 48 recorded the day before and follows weeks of declining fatalities in the state. It comes as several other Sun Belt states have recorded sharp rises in deaths.
Texas on Wednesday reported a one-day record for the state of 98 while Arizona reported 75 fatalities on Thursday, also more than double the day before. The Arizona tally brings its seven-day average to almost 68, the highest it has been during the pandemic.

To be fair, it's not just the cost of remdesiviir. It is the cost of the 27 other attempts you had to try before finding the one that works, and the cost of keeping the lights on and the trash taken out while you did all that other development without any associated revenue. Research is expensive, it usually pays off, but getting there incurs costs which have to be recovered eventually.
Plus, if you're not sure the drug is going to be unique or long in the marketplace, you need to recoup those costs asap.
