Lowden continued: "And I would have suggested, and I think that bartering is really good. Those doctors who you pay cash, you can barter, and that would get prices down in a hurry. And I would say go out, go ahead out and pay cash for whatever your medical needs are, and go ahead and barter with your doctor."

bartering doesn't mean pay with chickens.

Most doctors aren't even going to hear that.

Most hospitals won't even admit you if you don't have insurance.

This lady was talking shit and you know it.

As a carpetbagger should be!
But I'll continue to disagree with you on the clip; no matter what one thinks of Lowery, at no point in the clip you posted did she posit that "we" as a modern society should offer up a chicken to a doctor for payment, it was a piss-poor analogy for what Jerz posted below....she was using the fact that there was a time in American history that we as the populace used to take care of our own business and if that took negotiating with goods when there was no money then so be it.

How anyone could seriously take that clip at face-value is beyond me.

What?

The woman said that we could offer up chickens to our doctors in exchange for treatment.

How much more context do you want?

But like I said it doesn't even matter. She will probably get elected anyway because people in Nevada HATE Harry Reid.
She can go on being as ridiculous as she wants to be.

Even with his "macaca" moment George Allen barely lost to Jim Webb.

I'd like to see some doctor try to pay his student loan with a chicken though.

I get 15% off my dentist. 20% off my copay for my new leg brace. 30% off for my RA doc when he wasn't on my plan and I didn't want to find a new doc.
all I did was ask if there was a cash discount.

Saw this last night on MSNBC, but at no point in the clip did it show anything about her offering this up as an concept for today. Are we supposed to assume that since she mentioned practices from the past that she's proposing them for the future?!
Sorry but this one looks like a media outlet taking things out of context by playing a partial interview.

Only problem with that is - it's exactly what she said.  Don't go all partisan on this.  Just admit that she's an out-of-touch whackaloon.  She said that we need to change the way that health care works and when people without insurance should ask to speak to a doctor.  Then she talked about how doctors were sympathetic and that people used to barter with livestock and labor and that she was not backing down from this as a plausible way to pay for health care.

Bartering is trading goods or services for goods or services without a cash transaction.  She said people should barter with their doctors.  Did she mean "negotiate"?  Maybe.  Maybe she's not out of touch.  Maybe she's just stupid.

Lowden: Let them Barter with Chickens, or Let them Eat Cake?

by mcjoan

Fri Apr 23, 2010 at 06:50:02 AM PDT  Daily Kos

Does Sue Lowden really think that a system of barter can really replace the complex healthcare fee system in the U.S.? That doctors who accept chickens or house painting as a form of payment can pay their office staff, or their rent, or their utilities, or for the medical equipment they need through bartering with vendors? We don't know, because she hasn't been asked that. But chances are, she really doesn't have a particular depth of knowledge in how the healthcare system works and what the deep-seated problems within it are if she can glibly offer up bartering as a remedy.

What we do know about Sue Lowden is that she has a history of being unconcerned about her own employees' health care.

When Sue Lowden headed the Santa Fe hotel-casino, management forced a group of workers to shift to part-time status and sign away their health care coverage, said a judge who ruled the company violated fair labor practices. He ordered the Santa Fe to pay two dozen employees almost $188,000 in back wages and benefits and to reinstate three workers who lost their jobs, records show....

"The Lowdens campaigned viciously against the unions," said D. Taylor, secretary-treasurer of Culinary Local 226, who was involved in the effort to unionize the Santa Fe that started in 1993 and ultimately failed. "There were lots of twists and turns on this, and health care was one of the issues."

Her folksy hearkening back to the good ol' days of kindly country doctors might be appealing, and in limited cases still happens—in some  areas, people can and do barter for limited care. But it's hardly the answer to fixing a broken system, and when Lowden offers it up, you can be sure that it's not because she's looking out for working people.
