I never thought that I would get more trick or treaters in Dubai than back home in Massachusetts, but here it is!
It's kind of strange. Sitting on my front stoop with a basket of candy in hand, staring out at the date tree in my front yard. Sweating from the heat. Hoping the chocolate in the basket won't melt. A far cry from cold damp Halloween nights back in New England, the moon out and the sound of leaves blowing around outside.
Here, the sounds of "Trick or Treat!" get replaced by "Happy Halloween!" The funny thing is that the children shouting this as they hold out their goody sacks have French accents, British accents, Indian accents, Arabic accents. We get the same costumes here as in the states — Spiderman, Superman, witches, goblins, warewolves.
Seamus, 5 going on 25, cut short his candy acquisition journey to come back to the front stoop and help me give out the candy. When we ran out (we under estimated the sheer number of kids in our neighborhood), Seamus dips into his full bag of candy to give kids candy out of his own stash. I remark to Mrs. Mugs that perhaps he was not my son if he was more interested in giving away candy than hoarding it like the kids in my family did. I get a little choked up when I tell my little Monk (my nickname for him— short for Monkey) that I'm proud of him.
How strange it is to have Halloween in Dubai as we hear the loud Call to Prayer broadcast over our heads. How strange indeed.
But, Halloween is Halloween, and we are happy. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
How nice. It's great to hear that kids can still be kids, no matter where they are. Happy Halloween to you and everyone else !!

Antigone wrote:One year I went to a party with a younger couple. I carried my hiking stick and day-pack and wore my hiking boots, dirty scuffed jeans, a torn shirt with "blood" on it. I had leaves in my hair and fake, "bloody" slashes on my face. I carried a small (three inch tall) light brown teddy bear (that had come on a Christmas present I think; he had a red ribbon around his neck). I was a hiker who'd been mauled by a bear. I convinced my friend's boyfriend to dress as a golfer who'd been struck by lightening. Singed pants, hair on end, black streaks on his face and he carried a golf club, of course. We could not convince the other woman to go as a jogger who'd been hit by a car (tire marks on her jogging clothes, etc). So the triumvirate of wasn't complete. Still one of my most imaginative, and cheap costumes. heh..cool! thanks for playing along...and it's too bad your third person wouldn't cooperate. that would have been great! what was she instead?
