Where I come from is a land of many islands
Two rivers run to the east and to the west
I wanted to run far away as I could as fast as I could get
But no matter where I've been I can't escape who I am or forget

Where I come from paint is peeling all the time
The winter's long gets into your boots
The river runs high and wild, high and wild in the springtime
The tourists come through our fading little town when the sun shines

The veterans, the veterans of all the past wars
Sit outside on a Sunday afternoon
The mills closed down long ago and so we're way past unemployment
Like a bad joke somebody told on our town for their enjoyment

September sun colors boldly flying
In pretty reds, orange, gold and brown
Most beautiful as the light is dying
Most beautiful as the day goes down

Great song ... but her voice is consistently just a hair flat. Ruins it for me.

Some people type out a shitload of nonsense before they know what they're really writing about.

Her voice was affected by the chemo treatments she underwent while successfully battling breast cancer. This album was the first she recorded after that  treatment.

I'm happy to have her here regardless of any aledged pitch issues.
i could listen to her all day.

Mine went from 9 to 10.

Just for the record (NPI) I am a semi pro multi-instrumentalist musician, decent harmony vocalist. and Berklee alumni with so called perfect pitch (highly subjective).  Patty is among the top 3 female vocalists I would sell my soul to play and sing with.

You are simply not worthy of being in the audience. You miss the entire point.

So what's your take on Bob Dylan or Tom Waits?
Patty is a National Treasure.
See...this song has very nice guitar playing.  Makes it more bouncy.
Can't believe her song "Florida" is rejected by RP.  One of the best sad songs ever.
One of the most gifted songwriters and performers this Human Race has ever produced. She possesses a rare insight into the soul and sings in a way that touches the heart.
I'm from this area of Maine. This song hit the feelings for me. She captured the area perfectly, like painting a picture of Old Town and environs. I'm in awe of this talent.
Damn good song by patty who kicked cancer’s ass

Wabi-sabi
She's amazing, always. And people are much more critical of female voices on RP for some reason.

In the silence of a smile that understands"

I understand the comments on particulars of her voice but a lot of great artist do not have a perfect pitch voice, ie Mick Jagger.  It's having a distinctive voice that translate the artist's soul that gets my ear.  Plus her lyrics go to my core.

SRV was (in)famous for being just a millisecond behind the beat. But it's one reason his sound is instantly recognizable.

That is the point of the song!

Heard her at a concert with EmmyLou Harris and Gillian Welch - her voice was amazingly powerful and her lyrics are always interesting. Glad to hear she is a CA survivor - hope she can still sing joyfully. Some of us wish we could even come close

RP Advisory: Secure upper floor windows and  remove sharp objects from vicinity of listener. RP's about to play some blues!
Love the album cover.

Loved her with her Beau at the time Robert Plant in Band of Joy!

Thanks for the info - it may be that some of the critics (of which I would be one) have only come upon her lately. Those who hear Dylan singing now would struggle to get the 'love' based on his current voice rather than the lyrics and the history. The current song does not fully float my boat but I'll look up some earlier stuff.

Speaking of WFMU, I've still got my WFMU bumper sticker in the shape of a
Garden State Parkway logo...;-) How far back do you go with FMU ? I go all the
way back to Vin Scelsa days...

Well...you didn't stay, so....

So happy that I don't have the musical training to hear tiny flaws that would "ruin" a fabulous musician and songwriter such as Patty. I truly feel bad for you.
Petty Gryphin?
If you can't say something positive and all that .. I know, I know ..
I used to love Patti Griffin and still admire her and like a lot of her old stuff.  This comment is more about how my tastes have changed.
A friend suggested going to see her recently and I agreed.  I have enjoyed seeing her live a few times in recent (sort of) years.
Her sad girl music was like nails on a chalkboard to me.  I have been enjoying more pop/punk/garage-y music as I stare down turning 50 next year. I used to bask in a lot of sad girl folk and still enjoy it on occasion but I had to leave her show early.  The other thing is that she has written more upbeat tunes but she sure did not play any when I saw her.
There is no reason anyone on this site needs to care about my evolution but I just felt like sharing.  thanks!
I just can't believe some people like Tore Me Anus
I'm reluctant to give Patty Griffin anything other than a high score; so, I won't grade this at all.
Nice tune and lyrics... but Good Grief, who's killing the cat? {#Stupid}

Absolutely - her voice and lyrics hit me. I feel the emotion she put into writing it. She translates it so well. Love her.
Awe, it is about time I am hearing this on RP.  A fine new record by Patty.  Thank you for introducing me to her music.  I have seen her live 7 times over the years, there is not a better song writer out there.  If you haven't discovered Patty Griffin yet you are truly missing out on one of the greatest artists of our time.

Patty Griffin is another "new to me; thanks RP" artist who I'm slowly coming to appreciate. Little God was my intro and I'm enjoying each new track. Like several others I'm having to work past her voice to get to the beauty of the lyrics and music but she's just one of many that happens with and it's often worth it. Victoria Williams comes immediately to mind and then there's Joni, Ol' Neil, Jon Anderson (to name a few). Love their music but occasionally find myself tolerating certain songs at best. But wouldn't change them for anything. Thanks yet again Bill & Rebecca for keeping it interesting and helping expand my horizons.

Amazing new album. Certainly one of her best, and she has made some great albums. Obviously Bill likes her too!

Well said and I agree 100%. I think Patty has an extraordinary voice, power and nuance, plus she is one of the finest songwriters ever IMHO. My favorite song from the new album is River - hoping it gets onto the playlist here....
