Listening to this fills me with envy like few other live recordings ever will. I got to see Shane and the Popes and it was pandemonium. Absolute mayhem, with the terror of watching him drink. so. much. And then never miss a beat. It's been a long time but I think police got involved at the end. Or was that in the documentary?
Anyway: this sounds like a bigger crowd, bigger fame, bigger everything and wow I wish I'd been there.
Dayum. There will never be another band like that. Wow.

I saw the Pogues in 1987 at the Vic Theater in Chicago. That stands out as one of the best shows I have attended. I recall the reviews of other shows elsewhere essentially saying that the shows could either be great or far less than great depending on Shaneâs state of drunkenness. The one I saw was great. It was exhilarating. Shane did drink throughout, and at the end he handed his partly filled last glass to someone in the audience and wobbled off stage. He probably could not have gone on much longer, but he made it through.
