I spent a month in Amsterdam one week.
The central train station is walking distance to a lot of museums, resturants, the symphony, coffeshops, the red-light district etc. Some of the museums are family friendly and some are NOT. Be prepaired.

The Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum (National Art museum) are only about a 5 minute walk from each other and make a good outing. There was an awesome resturant that serves German style pancake breakfasts with a huge 19th century carosel in the center of the resturant. Can't remember the name but it should be easy enogh to describe and get directions. There's also the coffeshops of course, if you wish to spend some time in a fog, as Beezly would say. My favorite of those was a place called The Doors. The Bulldog is a tourist trap and not very good.

OMG!!
We arrive Amsterdam 21 June. 

1)  We'll have a few hours before our train leaves.  Any easy things to do for a couple hours? 

2) I talked Mom into taking the sleeper train to Aalborg!!  I'm very excited about this... and glad I don't have to get off the long plane trip and then drive for 3 hours.   Suggestions for the train?  Best place/time to purchase tickets?

3) We will probably rent a car in Denmark (we'll be there visiting family & friends for a week).  So, we could drive back to Amsterdam (a more expensive rental) or take the sleeper train from Copenhagen back to Amsterdam.  Advice?

4) It looks like we'll have 5 days in Amsterdam, 29 June- 3 July.  Tell me your favorite things to do! 

5) Two of our days can be a day trip to somewhere else in the Netherlands... suggestions?
