I generally think that way as well.  During the warmer months, she's been staying outside in my back yard while I'm at work during the day.  She stays inside in a really large master bathroom with toys, water and something to sleep on if it's raining.  It's starting to get colder but I don't want for her to be cooped up all day every day and she likes it outside.  My yard doesn't have any trees in it and today it's supposed to be around 48 - 50 degrees with full sunshine.  As it gets colder though, I get nervous about trying to predict if it's going to be warm enough for her outside.

Maybe a doggie door is in order? She can come and go and she likes and you'll know that she can get in if the weather turns...

Oh hey, btw... {#Hug}

I've read that domesticated animals like cats and dogs feel heat and cold in the same way we do and at the same temps, so if it's too cold for you to be out in a thin coat, then it's too cold for them, too.

Yeah, I've read articles on them where people have had them for years and years.  They let them off leash, as well but they warn that it could be a day 7 years after you've had them when they see something that appeals to their racing-nature.  Something that they flashback to and perceive as a lure.  If they break out, they'll be out of earshot in seconds.  I don't know that I'd risk it!  LOL

Speaking of spare dogs... I'm thinking about adopting a retired greyhound.  The Birmingham race track is closed for the season and there's a local agency that has several of them.  They're retired on average when they're 3 to 4 years old.  It's not very expensive as far as the initial fee goes.  I'm just trying to be sure that I can afford the extra food and vet costs.  They're amazing animals.  They sleep with their eyes open so you have to get into the habit of calling them by their name before you reach out to touch them.  Also, you have to keep them on a lead -  you can't trust them.  They can see vividly up to a mile and they can break out into a 45mph sprint in three strides.
