Yeah; the US cases seem to be pretty mild, all things considered.  Let's hope that it stays that way.

Well, it's part of the freedom you're obeisant to.

So why is there such a panic in the US about an influenza virus which is dangerous but no panic about the right to bear guns which is killing more people than this virus?

To advice washing hands looks only sincere where this is not usual.
But the US consumption of water is extraordinary.

Um, whatever.

I'd like to understand something tho: are you seriously concerned with the water used in hand washing?

If so, we aren't alone in worrying about trivial risks and non-problems.

I have no interest in defending guns. But like someone said earlier, the gubmint (and the media) has been successful in making Americans feel the need to own a gun to protect themselves. I personally think it's insane, but that's just me.

I would normally say no, but OK is one of the states that has cases of swine flu present, so better be safe than sorry.

As far as Exo's comment - is there a panic going on that I'm not aware of? I had to do a site visit for a grant application today. No one showed any hesitation to shake hands....

And IIRC, there was a study done in Africa on the relative merits of hand sanitizers vs. good old soap and warm water (a decent handwashing - 25 seconds). Hand sanitizers are a false sense of security. The very best method for preventing the spread of disease, according to that study, was the old-fashioned basic precaution: hand washing.

I agree. Handwash thoroughly with soap and warm water, for 25 seconds. Here in the US, we fall quite a bit behind a lot of other well-to-do countries in terms of handwashing. If ours was better, we wouldn't have the MRSA spread that's happening.
