Madoff pleads guilty and goes to jail in handcuffs

NEW YORK — Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty Thursday to an epic fraud that robbed investors worldwide of billions of dollars, avoiding eye contact with swindled investors before he was led out of court with his hands cuffed behind his back.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin denied bail for Madoff, 70, and ordered him to jail, noting that he had the means to flee and an incentive to do so because of his age.

Madoff spoke steadily in court as he addressed the judge before his guilty plea was accepted.

"I am actually grateful for this opportunity to publicly comment about my crimes, for which I am deeply sorry and ashamed," he said.

"As the years went by, I realized my risk, and this day would inevitably come. I cannot adequately express how sorry I am for my crimes."

Madoff did not look at any of the three investors who spoke at the hearing, even when one of them turned in his direction and tried to address him.

After arguments began as to whether Madoff should remain free on bail, his lawyer Ira Sorkin described the bail conditions and how Madoff had, "at his wife's own expense," paid for private security at his $7 million penthouse.

Loud laughter erupted among some of the more than 100 spectators crammed into the large courtroom on the 24th floor of the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan. The judge warned the spectators to remain silent.

Boodles was a decent place; you could get a good lunch for five bucks and they had local beer on tap. But the Pickle Barrel...my kids will be VERY disappointed.

The art gallery? Pfft. You could throw rocks thru random shop windows in Bozeman and hit a piece of "art" one out of three times.

Really—I only remembered shaking my head over Boodles' dinner menu prices and walking on down the street.  May just possibly have some personal bias, maybe, since the dirty rotten bastard who ran off with my girlfriend used to work there.

Also, the shoe place (see below) is only three blocks away.  Still. . . .

But I stand by the R Bar's demise as being no great loss—what a dump!  (Disclaimer: I was last in there in about 1985.  It's since been remodeled.  I have no idea what I'm talking about.)

No kidding. The explosion threw a parked car out into the street, blew out windows for blocks, threw bricks over a block away. At the lunch rush it could have easily caught a hundred people.

Still no word on the missing.

These pictures don't show as much damage as the stories describe, but it's still pretty bad.

Yeah.  The businesses (a "western" gallery, a ridiculously expensive and relatively-newly-arrived restaurant, a frat bar) aren't huge losses to the town.  But those buildings. . . .

Natural gas explosion in downtown Bozeman this morning. Destroyed roughly half a city block, many beautiful old buildings. Lots of wreckage and damage. As of 5 pm it was still burning.

One person missing so far.

Yeah.  The businesses (a "western" gallery, a ridiculously expensive and relatively-newly-arrived restaurant, a frat bar) aren't huge losses to the town.  But those buildings. . . .

We installed cabinetry in a jewelry store eight blocks away.  My boss called there this morning.  Cabinets still on wall . . . but shoes knocked from shelves next door—eight blocks from the explosion.
