It's also a bit of a myth that Germans work hard. I don't think they work harder than any other nation. What they do do well is coming up with systems that everyone can agree on and more importantly observe.. Very efficient way to get things done (even if ever so slightly boring..)

You said it, not me.   There is something abut the whole systematic thing that I would love for a little while (I mean who can complain when the trains run on time, people do what is expected of them and so on).  I really, really hate rules though so it wouldn't be for me in the long term.  However I have met and liked enough Germans to see plenty of them poke fun at the system too.

There was that German chap we met in Madeira- he REALLY couldn't understand why the supermarket was two minutes late opening.

PS: Your wife is lovely and definitely not in the stereotypical German mould.

Well if that not the kettle calling the pot black. How about they pay the world back for WWII. What about all the looted Grecian antiquities they have in they're museums. shouldn't that count for the debt?

I agree that there is corruption since they became a Socialist/Communist nation, giving up the democracy they created and that they should go along with the rest of the world and have people retire at 67 since we all live a lot longer today. But I don't think Germany is so innocent in the bribe department either.

Maybe Germany is going for another land grab? Do they want to compare the two countries economy? Economic juggernaut vs Agronomic?

Boy the got some real big ones.

From todays Guardian. -it does sound kind of authentic.

After yesterday's call by two German politicians that Greece sell off islands, historic buildings and artworks before receiving aid, the German tabloid Bild has written an open letter to the Greek prime minister George Papandreou:

 Dear prime minister,

If you're reading this, you've entered a country different from yours. You're in Germany.

Here, people work until they are 67 and there is no 14th-month salary for civil servants. Here, nobody needs to pay a €1,000 bribe to get a hospital bed in time.

Our petrol stations have cash registers, taxi drivers give receipts and farmers don't swindle EU subsidies with millions of non-existent olive trees.

Germany also has high debts but we can settle them. That's because we get up early and work all day.

We want to be friends with the Greeks. That's why since joining the euro, Germany has given your country €50bn.

Mostly the people. But yes, an urban fire would not only be a national tragedy for Hellas, but a tragedy for the whole world.
