dad's influence due to his hi-fi and albums:
joe walsh - so what
zz top - first album
sly & the family stone - dance to the music

then later on (high school/college):

QOTSA - songs for the deaf
spoon - ga ga ga ga ga, lucifer on the sofa
big thief - masterpiece
black pumas - black pumas
devon gilfillian - black hole rainbow

that was fun.

Great list! I like the difference between your mom's and dad's taste. Sounds like he was a rocker!

thanks - i had fun. i didn't really follow directions since i mostly gave albums instead of specific songs (except in a couple instances) because it would be too hard to pick just one song.

Well for my January mix it's a little too late as it went out in the mail yesterday afternoon. It falls in the "and now for something completely different" category but not that different. I'll keep this in mind for the next one. Might be cool to revisit some of that stuff.

Nice idea.
I'll attempt that disc my next go around after my February release... which is in production at the moment.

Don't know about a whole playlist that would be worth listening to. But here are my earliest formative tunes
First thing I heard on a little AM radio in our living room while Mom covered everything in Pledge.
A record my Dad had which I always loved to hear
and a song I heard so often, and have never tired of. It might be the perfect song: the drunk calling his ex from a bar. "Tell me do you love me true?" and asking The Man to turn down the music in the bar so he can talk, and he gets pushy. "Make up your mind/I've got know." And so he wants her to tell her date to leave, just so she can tell him that she still loves him.
Desperation, pathos, inevitability... All in 2:11

Of course, there can be a part two: lying in bed in Ruston LA while visiting some family friends and I hear FM for the first time. Green Eyed Lady.
Or getting ready for school and listening to KLOL Houston and Minnie Ripperton tells me I'm beautiful. And ELP play Toccata on that same station and blow my mind. And every night, it's time for...Headphones Only.
And Pat Ziefle takes a few of our high school senior Special Chemistry class on a field trip to the Sulphur, LA, refineries and she puts in the 8-track of Close to the Edge and I don't hear anything that anyone in the car is saying after that...

My dad had an album from the Kirby Stone Four before they got signed to a major. Which is kind of cool in an extraordinarily uncool sort of way.
He was also a  big fan of Spike Jones

'nuff said? I think so.

My links are dead, but when I do a mix it’s a downloadable file. You could burn it if that’s your jam, but I have the same issue with CDs - As soon as I get them I have to digitally convert them so I can listen with the Good Speakers.
Steely, why don't you put together a "digital download for dummies" instructions and maybe we can send you and Lilly our mixes that way instead of wasting a CD and mailing costs. I myself have no idea how to go about this, I'm as old school as Lilly's 2010 Honda

I have a 2004 Honda and a Pioneer deck in it that plays CD's and also has a USB jack and a mini plug jack.  My 2019 Honda doesn't have a CD drive, just USB and the usual wireless stuff which I don't use.  The Pioneer is so primitive that doing any file searching on the USB is next to impossible so I just play single tracks on the USB as they come or on random or CD's  The 2019's display is really nice and searching files and folders is pretty simple so I will also do album sides there and mixes in folders.  USB's are great for car rentals.  You can play mp3's in any car with a USB input.  Other file types are a crap shoot and as far as I know, none do flac yet.  With Honda, you have to get an EX or better to be able to play wav files.  I had a Kia Soul rental that played wav.  Basic Fords seems to and GM doesn't unless you get a premium system and then I'm only guessing.

Somewhere you have a folder with all the tracks set up for burning ?

Go to wetransfer.com and open up a free account.  You can move up to 2 GB at once.  Simply upload the folder it its entirety and then you have a choice of creating a link to the download or you can send a link via email to an individual through wetransfer directly.  You can also add messages to the download with instruction and comments if you like.

The link will then allow you to download the folder and open it up.  IIRC, they are self extracting zip files.  I don't remember since I do more sending than receiving, but so far everyone seems to be able to open them up successfully.

Here's a example ...  https://we.tl/t-8l7UJq8ZTN The link is only good for 7 days and then it expires and disappears.

It contains a folder entitled RP 2024 with two folders inside. Melanie and the other is RP MCC 21.  The RP MCC 21 folder is how you would set one up for transfer.  Note that you will have to change the file names with the play order at the beginning so that the recipient will know.  You have to use the format of 01 for track 1, 02 for track 2, etc.

The Melanie folder has a song from an album I ripped last night called Psychotherapy.  It is a really cool live track that captures Melanie in the beginning as a girl with a guitar and a very cool sense of humor and also a snap shot of what was going on at the end of the 60's.  Guaranteed to make you smile.

You asked about how I must have taken such good care of my albums.  Well there is a boat load of work involved to get to the final product you hear. There is the raw ticks and pops and all the crap  track called before.  The album only got played a couple of times because it was such a shitty pressing and basically sat for the next 45 years until now when I decided to pull it out with the news of her passing.  All the stuff that you hear took about 5 hours and over 600 individual edits of the wav file using a pencil tool like you would use for drawing in a CAD program to get to the fixed final version.  Then another hour to EQ it and do some polishing. I manually redraw the actual wav line and change it to remove ticks and do other things. This way the overall sound is unaffected by automatic programs that can degrade the music.

Is it worth all the hassle ?  I think so, that and with the way music is released these days there are still tick, pops and glitches in the digital files and on CD's.  So I know how to deal with those from working on the vinyl and get them to where they should be.  This is what I do almost fulltime, when I'm in the mood ... But this is what I have been planning for many years as what to do with the winter years of my life.

So go ahead and download and check it out and see if this would work for you in the future.

Anyone else reading, go for it, too.  The Melanie track is nothing but pure fun.

Cheers !
