I expect I'll be given all kinds of heckling over this, but three such covers, to me, are -

"Hazy Shade of Winter" by the Bangles (originally by Simon & Garfunkel)
"The Man Who Sold The World" by Nirvana (originally by David Bowie)
"Because The Night" by 10,000 Maniacs (originally by Patty Smith)

I'll second you on all three. I also must add:

"Layla" when Eric Clapton reinvented the song himself for MTV Unplugged
"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix (originally by Bob Dylan)

Marc Cohn's "Tears of a Clown" cover isn't better than the original, but it's damn good! Very smooth and jazzy.

Did we??? How utterly cool. I must've been absent that day. I'll bet Hotski knows.

One more to add...Johnny Cash covering NIN's "Hurt". I really like the original, but absolutely love the remake.

I liked hearing how Trent Reznor heard Johnny's version and said "I don't own that song anymore...."

Indeed. So good that I know at one time NIN's never sang it because they said they could never do it as good. Not sure if they still don't though.
