Ptooey had posted a link to a live-in-studio performance by this band about a year ago and they just happened to be playing in my area around that time so I went to see them. Good band, excellent musicians, nice folks. Anyhow, they are coming back to my area next month and apparently have an album due in August; I found this video on their site. - it has about a 1:00 intro.
I had seen it couple of times with sound muted because I was at work; then had a chance to listen at home but only heard it once and having had a chance to listen again, my meh remarks were from a musical standpoint and the cynical coming out in me of him using all of the flashpoints of today with the sensationalist violence to guarantee hype and buzz for his career. Using social justice as a virtue signalling ego or career booster is a pet peeve of mine. Let's face it, social justice is a big business now and you gotta fall in line, but knowing Glover's work I think he is genuinely using art to make a point and the point is correct especially regarding attention span of the media and great unwashed, the gun aspect of his message is a little unclear would like to here his thought process on that. The bass line is pretty cool, I just don't like that new style of Hip-Hop these kids listen to nowadays (classic old man get off my lawn stuff). However the cinematography is outstanding and as much as I fight it, I do like the strangeness of the dancing. Donald Glover got his start writing for 3rd rock and then was a main character in Community with Joel Hale for however long that show was on, but his real masterpiece is the FX show Atlanta. You really need to check it out, it is really good.
Edit: Was reading the comments from the video and it seems my initial criticism of the music was also part of his point, this video is much more satirical than I first took and that style of Hip-Hop and dancing was actually used to make a point of how pointless and lame it is in the face of the horrors of the world. Now I get what he was doing, it is even more brilliant. Well done, Mr. Glover!
Don't get toooo cynical.
The funny thing is that I get remarks of some people complaining how music is so empty nowadays and that there are not enough protest songs or songs with social commentary. Usually I think they aren't looking in the right places. I wouldn't expect to find a lot of such songs in mainstream pop anyway. Pop is biz. Though I have to admit I don't follow (or listen to) the current big names in pop very much.

Yea I read that article. I was referring to the comments in you tube which were very informative as well. The nuances and layers to this video are astonishing so many subtle and obvious references that may never be all sorted out. Suffice to say he covered all angles.

Don't know the guy, but the buzz surrounding the video was hard to avoid. I like the video and bass-y parts of the song

Meh going for shock value. Good career move though, people will eat it up. Dude should just stick to producing, writing and acting, his show Atlanta is genius.
