Hey, what's one of the problems with being an Atheist? No one to talk to when you hit your finger with a hammer! Hey, what did it say on the atheists tombstone? All dressed up with no place to go!
Ba da dum...

A dictator? No. Sorry hc. Unlike many Liberals who made those charges against Mr. Bush, I won't level them against Mr. Obama. I have too much respect for the checks and balances built into our form of Government. I said I supported the repeal of DADT. I also applauded the tax compromise he reached *even though Congress attempted to turn that into a Christmas tree of goodies*. You know, a good number of people just a few weeks back said NO to Mr. Obama using other Democrats as their sounding board.

Under any Presidency, it would be the work of Congress. A good thing? Agreed. But a President's powers are clearly enumerated in The Constitution and they are not as broad as some would think. They are actually quite limited given the nature of the Office.

I look at legislation that turns my stomach. Once Uncle Sam gets his tentacles into the Internet, it will never be free of increasing manipulation by Uncle Sam. Of course you think he is awesome. I just see a man, nothing more. I would have voted to repeal DADT and against the First Reponders Bill. I would have also voted NO on START. But, they passed, he gets credit and we move forward.

I'd say man's best attempt to do that has been through the rule of law. You don't get very far with just loving a god and your neighbours (in context, usually the members of your tribe). People need specifics and clauses. You're not allowed to kill, unless it's an enemy or an adulterer, etc. Okay, I will cede and say one of instead of the best. That more accurately reflects my thoughts. I'm no holy roller by any stretch; but if I'm going to be honest with myself I would have to say that a big part of my sense of right and wrong was borne out of catechism, religion, etc. Similarly from my family which also had the church as an influence. I'm just observing that they share quite a bit of common ground. Of course with law you get jail and church you get damnation! Atheists would gladly accept the damnation, agnostics would be a bit ambivialent, and true believers very worried I suspect.

Politics does the same thing; religion is just a different version of politics.
As someone who was raised Catholic you'll get no argument from me on that. I don't think the most religious here would deny that religion and politics are inextricably intertwined. Speaking for myself (and probably many others) this is what contibuted to my disillusionment with religion as I became an adult. That said, even this political nation of ours was borne out of a desire for something better and I don't think religion is any different. Removing the question of deity, God, etc., religion still has credible philosophical considerations of the human condition IMHO
