Did you see how he farted in the other dogs face to get him moving at about 1:30 in? Worse than smelling salts. Of course the other dog started moving, I would too.

There was a documentary a while back about the cats of Chernobyl and how they were actually thriving and descendants of some of the cats were still living in the ruins of the houses their ancestors were left behind in. When Chernobyl was evacuated people were not allowed to take their pets. Then foxes and other larger animals started coming in and preying on the cats so many of the cats trekked out of the forbidden zone and some people started taking them in. Cats are pretty resilient it seems.

beamends wrote:I'm not so sure about that. I watched a documentary about what has happened in the Chernobyl area since the accident, and it raised a lot of interesting points. The first was that many seemingly respected reports about what is going on are border-line fictional, based of assumptions, preconceptions, rumour and innuendo by people who have never actually visited (he cited examples). The second was that quite a large number of people still live in the restricted area (not the town itself of course), and the long term effects have not panned out as expected, either amongst human or wild life populations. The point the bod presenting it was making was this : Predictions of the effects of the radiation have been drawn from extrapolating the much higher radiation levels after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, assuming there was a linear correlation between those high contaminations and the much lower ones around Chernobyl. This is, or at least was then, perceived wisdom in the scientific community, but the evidence presented suggests that the 'graph' is not linear, and once contamination drops below some level the effects of radiation, while not exactly conducive to good health, are far less than expected. Also mentioned were some web sites that purport to show defective births related to Chernobyl, but there was no evidence to suggest those sites are anything more than galleries of unfortunate children from just about anywhere - i.e. propaganda.
I have not seen the documentary, or really much of anything else about Chernobyl. I was just pointing out the article itself hedged about how well the wildlife was doing, and cited examples. Whether those examples have anything to do with the radiation is anyone's guess. I'm sure the documentary has a more detailed examination of the situation than a short article.

Of course there was a major spike in cancer for local inhabitants, but even they are rebounding. Just goes to show you, you can never underestimate the resiliency of life! It is amazing how tough the enviorment is.

I brought this up the first day. Not to seem nation centric(if that's a real term) at this sensitive time, but we are truly screwed now. Truly. There are at least 2 reactors awaiting approval by the NRC within 100 miles of where I live. I say light 'em up ASAP. I don't expect to see the US getting off foreign oil in my lifetime, but it would be nice if we at least had a plan for the future.
