19 years old and no concert funds...Hitchhiked to San Bernadino with a friend and shimmied up a drain pipe at the back of the San Bernadino Auditorium to sneak in an open window to see Lee Michaels and Rod Stewart circa 1970. Good times..........

In 1965 "Uncle" Russ Gibb, a Dearborn, MI, junior high school teacher and occasional radio broadcaster, had visited a friend in San Francisco. Both went to a concert at the original Fillmore run by Bill Graham. Gibb was amazed and thought something like that could be replicated in Detroit. Soon Graham was providing first-hand instruction as to how to rent a facility and run similar concerts, and so it was that the Grande Ballroom was born.
Meanwhile, taking the advice of manager Robert Stigwood, Cream had passed on the Monterey Pop Festival—the thinking being that they had to have a name for themselves prior to touring the States. Their first foray was at an ill-conceived, week-long battle of the bands outing in New York, promoted by Murray the K, that proved to be a disaster. In the autumn of '67 Graham booked them for a week at the Fillmore, and it was on this abbreviated tour that the group made their midwest debut at Detroit's Grande Ballroom in October. Glancing at a school bulletin board, I spotted a crude sign-up sheet to go see them play at their Sunday afternoon "no age limit" concert. Bus transportation was provided by the school and tickets were $3.50. I had never heard of the Grande Ballroom, Cream, or Eric Clapton, so had no idea what was in store. This being my first concert, I had never before experienced anything like what I encountered that afternoon, what with all of the day-glo, blacklights, liquid lightshow and blooming hippiedom in full regalia. And life has never been the same since...

black321 wrote:Lot's of good stories...but the most serendipitous (mixed in with a good dose of stupidity on my part) was at a Stevie Ray Vaughn/Jeff Beck show at the LA Sports Arena (early 90s). Somehow I couldnt convince anyone to go to this show with me so I went alone (actually, I had no friends, ha), and I had a terrible seat up in the nose bleed section. Of course, I didnt sit there but meandered down to the mezzanine section, standing in the aisle. Sure enough security came by a bunch of times during the SRV set and told me to take my seat. About the 6th or so time, he came around with a partner and I proceeded to tell him to F off, and I had some cock-a-mamie right to stand there since I bought a ticket...(did I mention the fifth of Jack in the parking lot before the show which undoubtedly provided me with this insightful wisdom?) Anyway, I failed to notice his partner was one of LA's finest who proceeded to lock my hands behind my back and ever so gently, kick my ass out of the arena. Well, I was having such a good time and I needed to try to find a way back in. As I searched for a possible side door back in (this worked for me at a couple Dead shows), I came upon the ticket booth and proceeded to see if there were any tickets left. Sure enough, there was one. So I bought it and re-entered the arena. Not knowing where the seat was located (dont recall even looking at the seat #), I asked an usher who indicated it was down on the floor. I started my way first in the back, but each usher I asked directed me further towards the stage, until the final one showed me my 5th row, center seat...just as Stevie was finishing his set. I actually found myself sitting behind Bonnie Raitt, who spent much of the intermission lip locked with her boyfriend. Great show. As good as Beck was, I was even more impressed with Terry Bozzio's drum playing. Not exactly crazy, but a good memory for me. The craziest was a trip from Albany to Foxboro, MA in 87, with no ticket or place to stay in a car with its brakes failing (ultimately abandoned) and no way back but hitchiking...and way too much acid and a backpack full of pot. Somehow I made it inside the stadium, 2x and ended up in a hotel somewhere in RI.
This story made me smile....and I needed it. Thanks!

Halfway up Hwy 1 we saw a car of partiers headed for the Led Zep - Jethro Tull Concert. Somehow, through sign lanquage and esp our new buddies offered us two free tickets to the show. We leaned out our windows at 60 miles an hour and exchanged the tickets. Never saw them at the show or ever again but, what a great gift. One of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen a bunch. I have a story of the trips we made to see Zep at 3 rivers way back. Where is Spliff?
