Putin will be laughing all the way to the bank(s of the Oder and beyond). The future of the EU is going to be hanging on a silk thread for the next few years. One can only hope as time passes and a new generation rises, one that is not scared of open borders and foreigners, the tide will turn back again. But right now, things are looking pretty grim for open societies in Europe. My nightmare case scenario: The EU dissolves. Trump is elected. Putin walks into the vacuum on the back of misplaced nationalist sentiment and no one is going to stop him. At best, he will just reassert post 1989 borders. At worst, he'll just keep on marching.. or, knowing him, he'll let the local fascists do it for him so nobody realises they are actually getting invaded by a Russian reincarnation of Genghis Kahn. These are all things that I thought were absolutely inconceivable just a week ago. Timothy G. Ash has a good take on it

See, you're not asking the right question. It needs to figure in the number of trombone solos per Chicago album along the axis including number of times Tiger Woods didn't make the cut.

Because, hey, Friday: Using the age groups for the Brexit vote as noted above, I located some age distribution data for the US population, and then did some rough calculations (variable being lack of accurate count data on 18 & 19 yo). Age distribution data source
Applying the same voting percentages ... and, oh, a crazy substitution: Clinton = Remain / Trump = Leave Age Group | Clinton | Trump | Totals | 18-24* | 22,801,602 | 7,600,534 | 30,402,136 * | 25-49 | 58,712,161 | 46,130,984 | 104,843,145 | 50-64 | 25,863,576 | 32,917,278 | 58,780,854 | 65+ | 15,704,514 | 24,563,470 | 40,267,984 | | | | | Totals | 123,081,853 | 111,212,266 | 234,294,119 | | | | | Winning spread | 11,869,586 | | 5.1% | EDIT: wait! % turnout of voting age population is not accounted for ! Guestimation and adjustments now underway!*18-24 count is not accurate. The number used for 18-24 is calculated by taking an approximation of 18&19 yo voters as 8,816,137 persons, then adding that to the 20-24 age group (21,585.999) Interesting....

I would say a certain part of the exit vote was due to this, but how much? Maybe it's a fine line between xenophobia, and simply trying to protect one's own country/culture. To describe the entire exit vote as xenophobia (and i dont think you are) is a very narrow way of looking at it. There are a lot of good, solid reasons for exiting.

Beaker wrote: You realize now, that the polls (and bookies) were all predicting a win for the Stay side in the Brexit vote, right?
Again, from that same article: "As ever," adds The New York Times, "referendums are not about the question asked but the political mood at the time, and the political mood is sour."
The vote in November is of course, yet to happen. You can easily measure the demographics and age of the voters after the vote, as I'm sure some will.
Me, I won't be shocked if it's a very similar outcome, re the age split.
I understand the mood is sour, but to say Brexit and Trump are the same thing is a bit of a stretch in my mind. Folks under 50 wanted to remain, but will live within the decision that the older folks "made." We see the same thing in my school district: there's a voting block from a 55+ community that is very active but very frugal. So we couldn't get more money for our schools like our surrounding districts have; the older voting block (understandably) didn't want any more of their pension taken by taxes. So their decision making affects all the children in our area. Democracy, right? Can't live with it, can't...waitaminnit.

Beaker wrote:Excerpt: The first lesson Brexit has for anti-Trump America is that there's a potential majority out there that is angry, scared, and more than willing to jump into the abyss. Sober analysts and economists warned Britons repeatedly that pulling out of the EU would be an economic and security debacle. "They heard the warnings, listened to experts of every kind tell them that Brexit meant disaster, watched the prime minister as he urged them not to take a terrible risk," says Matthew d'Ancona at The Guardian. "And their answer was: Get stuffed." It wasn't young people giving the finger to the experts, either. According to a YouGov poll, support for exiting the EU steadily rose with each age bracket, from 75 percent of those aged 18 to 24 wanting to stay, versus 39 percent for those 65 and older. If older Britons are proving less risk-averse than the young, there's no reason to think America's most reliable voters are immune to change fever. In many ways, Hillary Clinton represents a continuation of President Obama's policies, and Donald Trump inarguably represents change. Great Britain is, technically, an island (or two), but the winds buffeting the U.K. don't stop at the water's edge. "The referendum came at a time when populist revolts against elites were gaining momentum, from Eurosceptic parties in France, Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia to Trump's brand of Republicanism in the U.S.," says The Guardian. "As ever," adds The New York Times, "referendums are not about the question asked but the political mood at the time, and the political mood is sour."
Hogwash. I havent seen much evidence that the older/retired population is behind Trump. To the contrary, you now have many Fox watching republicans retirees willing to vote for Hillary, as they cross themselves entering the voting booth. It's the middle age group that's behind Trump.

Saw an article that I can't find now contending that the exit was necessary because of how EU restrictions make them have poorer vacuums, and there's some problem with quality refrigerators.
Not living over there, I couldn't tell if I'd found a very dry version of the Onion.

It was always a half assed effort anyway...Europe was never able to capitalize the so called peace dividend of the early 90s. Is the world becoming a larger place again?
