Ok, let's assume that the deaths in China were grossly underreported.
This still doesn't mean the Chinese government had no response or an ineffective one, which seems to be what you are implying here.
If you do think this, how do you explain the fact that the epidemic didn't spread to the rest of China? O how do you reconcile their current infection rate compared to the US?

No one here is idolising the Chinese government or extolling their "regard for humanity". The fact that their performance at managing the crisis outshines the US does not mean the Chinese governments are angels. It means the US government was extraordinarily bad at doing what it should have done. If you are going to have a government, you should be able to rely on the very basics that good government can offer. That you can't is a pretty sad indictment on the current state of affairs.

Assume the whole world is underreporting by 20%, and that the US number fairly accurate.  We would still have 4.25% of the world's population and 25% of the world's deaths.

PS I see in the meantime you have edited you post to add the "pesky bill of rights"... well if you think that was the problem, try comparing the performance of the US to Germany or Denmark, or Australia, or New Zealand... need anymore?

what a loaded question!
If you phrased your question like this:

The Chinese government responded better to this pandemic than the US government in order to keep fatalities low and flatten the curve.

How would you answer?

That there are probably lots and lots of people laying in very large ditches.   They got lots and lots of people, there is no use of keeping track and no worry about losses throw in no pesky Constitution and Bill of Rights and you've got a free ride to do what you like as long as Bejing is properly locked down and trust me Bejing was taken care of immediately.

Flynn's prosecution just fell apart.  Expect it to be terminated, with some punishments handed out for many.

3) Basic facts: China didn't "send CV 19" to anyone. They had a pandemic starting. It got out before they managed to shut down their country.
4) The USA seems to have less regard for human life in this pandemic than most countries. The first-hand accounts I have read from China and the other information I can glean show that they imposed strong shut-down measures and threw huge amounts of resources into the health care system to save lives, rather than saying grandparents would be happy to die for the economy.

So the Chinese government has more regard for human life than the US?  Well that is an interesting opinion.  Perhaps I should move to China to be treated better.

How many hospitals did the US build? I know they threw up some tents and brought in a boat.

Oh there are plenty of ways the Chinese government is screwed up, but they did a heck of a lot better job than the US on getting the virus under control and the subsequent reopening than the US who's response has been horrible, especially in the rush to ignore the scientific guidance on how to ease restrictions. Don't forget that China pretty much started off behind the curve since they were first out of the blocks and had a massive outbreak before anyone knew anything about the disease, had no tests available, and were only figuring out how to treat it. Same thing in Italy.

Matt Taibbi is hard to read, no matter who or what he's eviscerating. He presents uncomfortable truths but surrounds them with sweeping generalizations about the FBI and Democratic voters' opinions of the Bureau. And then there's the sneering and ranting.

It's a rather long, & entertaining read.  Here's just some...

John@Johnheretohelp·May 15We have met. I have unfortunately worked with Elijah Cummings on more than one occasion. The latest was when he asked me to "assess"
the viability of his wife's political campaign. The access granted for that proved very very interesting.96431.3K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15Quick question "your honor", over the years how many millions of dollars in government funds did yourself and your buddy Elijah Cummings siphon off of Howard University? I guess you were right when you said " they don't need it they never amount to anything".199931.7K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15On a side note, I think it's very kind of you to help your a good friend Cummings in his little multimillion-dollar insurance fraud scheme.
Like he said no one's ever going to get a police search warrant for federal judges house.68571.6K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15What better place to hide a bunch of "stolen" art work. I especially like the two of you have in your private office at home.
You don't have any intention of giving those back do you?
But I digress.127891.5K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15Besides the money laundering and the insurance fraud for yourself and your friends. Should we talk about the cases that you have corrupted for money or favors?
I've compiled quite a list.
Perhaps I should point out the non politically advantageous cases66841.4K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15where you just stuck it to the defendant because you could, or because you didn't like them or their race, or because you had "fixed" so many other cases you had to make some of them look "normal". Any comment judge?
Because it's about to get worse.36131.3K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15There was a "secret" deal in your courtroom, a deal threatening General Flynn's son. You can pretend it was a secret but you knew about it the entire time. You colluded with the prosecutor continuously. But all that's very obvious now.
An innocent man faced with evil,118121.6K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15evil against himself and his son. An honorable man, an intelligent man with integrity, a warrior, will stand in front of his son against any evil.
An evil plan thought you knew of an allowed to happen. Then you pretended not to know anything about it.85591.3K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15And when it did finally come out you did not rebuke the prosecution for it.
General Flynn fell on a sword for his son, you cannot ask for a greater love or respect. I know it well, I had to do it for my wife and my family.
66381.5K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15We just discussed a relationship between a father and his son. One of the strongest bonds in this world and beyond.
I understand your a father as well.
Normally I would not discuss children but since your children figure so prominently in shaping your decisions on the bench15271.2K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15I will go ahead and include them here.
You have two sons, both of them violent no good pieces of crap that Daddy has had to cover for their whole life.
One in particular, your namesake. That must be a particular thorn in your side.76481.3K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15In 2012 he was arrested for the violent assault and rape of an underage girl. He beat and raped her for several hours at his home, and when he was "finished" with her, he left her laying on the floor while he went and watched television.177681.3K
John@Johnheretohelp·May 15He didn't give her another thought until approximately an hour later when he went to use the bathroom and she was still laying in the same spot, unresponsive.
Did he call an ambulance out of concern? No.He left the house and called you from his car.
You wanted to know who it was,

Lucky you. Given the conflict ended I ended up with pretty easy duty. My Army officer dad was just glad I got a haircut.  My number was 110.

Yep, I went down and showed up, didn't run or hide.  Had the Quakers passing out leaflets to all of us as we got on the bus to go to the federal building for the physical.  The whole shebang.  Yes, I did get lucky.  And I have never disparaged anyone who went and served, ever.  I have the utmost of respect for those who did.  As you know it was very crazy back then.  Lot's of emotion.  I was one of those who defended the troops against the spitters for openers.

My Dad was a Staff Sargent in the Army during the Korean War.  He stayed stateside in the Bay Area.  His father was a Commander in the Navy.  Served as paymaster for the Canal Zone (Panama) when my Dad was a just barely a teenager.  Not sure of the years.  Probably late 1930's.  Spent a fair amount of time at the old base in Long Beach growing up then.

Just curious, Kurt. I believe we are the same age, give a year or so. Did you get a draft notice, or was your number high enough to save you from entering the service?  Mine was just low enough, I quit my rock & roll band & enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. I’m designated as a Vietnam Era Veteran, meaning I enlisted during the conflict but was not deployed to Vietnam as the war ended just as I was up for orders 2 years in.

You sound like an alcoholic saying that, imo.

It was addressing the thought about perspective.  And how we use it to temper our reactions to our present circumstances.

Did it make you uncomfortable ?  It was supposed to.  Just like you all are uncomfortable with our POTUS and CV 19 and everything else about today.  It could be a picture from the hoods of Chicago today on the news.  Instead it is a reminder of the perspective in the part of the world that sent us CV 19.  And it was relevant to the referenced timeline.  The way life is regarded over there is little different now than when the picture was taken.  Deal with it.

We have seen worse.  Sometimes we need a real reminder of just how bad things were before now.  And that it wasn't all that long ago.  Just about 50 years, which is a blink in time.

I'll take down the gif, but I'm leaving the still up and in place.

You sound like an asshole saying this, imo. Also for posting it and acting like you are doing a favor by taking down the ugliest piece of it.
