Same with cancer and chemo.

THC goes a long way in helping to overcome that problem.

One of the reasons it is used by cancer patients.

It causes da munchies !!!

Flag raised for ENTs

This week, ENT UK, the British Association of Otorhinolaryngology, said in a guidance document that in countries with high coronavirus rates, including South Korea, China, Italy, Iran and France, significant numbers of patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection have developed anosmia, or a reduced ability to smell (hyposmia).

“We really want to raise awareness that this is a sign of infection and that anyone who develops loss of sense of smell should self-isolate,” Claire Hopkins, president of the British Rhinological Society, told The New York Times. “It could contribute to slowing transmission and save lives.”

In Germany, more than two out of three COVID-19 cases have anosmia. In South Korea, where testing has been more widespread, 30 percent of people with confirmed cases have reported loss of the sense of smell as the major symptom in otherwise mild cases.

“The unique part of this association is that the reports are coming from patients who are COVID-19-positive, and in some cases, they’re having the smell loss when their symptoms are pretty mild,” Holbrook told MassLive.

Um...do we have to wait until the death toll from a disease reaches that level before we take it seriously? Once half a million have died it's too late. We failed.

It's not racist to try and prevent your friends and family dying gasping for breath.

Thought I'd give a quick update from rural Australia. Ok, not out back of beyond, a small city that is a long commute from Melbourne. So there were a lot of people going back and forth to the big smoke. We are a regional health centre which is good. They made a dedicated COVID emergency facility in the old hospital.

The rapidly changing rules have lead to some confusion. Some of that is due to people not following the rules so they have tightened things up. One of the things they decided is that to get people to stay home, you make it less attractive to go out. So parks and beaches (if you are near the ocean) are closed. But wisely they are still encouraging people to exercise. Groups of people who don't live together are limited to two. It is important that women be allowed to exercise with someone else for safety. The dog park is open. We have been taking a friend's pup with us and have now taken up doing her grocery shopping. She is on oxygen and my biggest worry is transmitting something to her.

At the small local grocery near me, they only let a few people in at a time and give them gloves. Pack your own bags and keep your distance at check out. Still slim pickings but I scored some paper towels. The thing that really pisses me off is that grocery prices are sky-rocketing. Makes no sense since the increased demand at home should be mostly offset by the slowdown at restaurants. Takeout is allowed and there probably would be rebellion if people couldn't get takeaway coffee. I bought extra prepaid cards at one of my coffee-pushers to help them out.

There still seem to be too many cars out but I suppose I see them when I'm out so I can't point fingers. Roadworks are continuing.

Shipments of PPE are starting to arrive from China but they have intercepted a number with false certifications. Cruise ships are a huge problem (not locally but nationally). The worst is yet to come, but I am cautiously optimistic that they are doing mostly the right thing.

The conservative-leaning Federal government is doing some things to support the people affected by the virus and shutdown. More people-focused than the US, anyway. My state government, who I'm not super fond of for other reasons is doing pretty well. They were hemorrhaging money before the bush fires and this, so I'm not sure how that will shake out.

Hang in there everyone. If I was in the US, I'd say I'm rooting for you but that is highly inappropriate in Australia.

28 Texas State students returning from Cabo tested positive. All were rooming and sharing a plane together. However, Gov. Greg Abbott's 'border' quarantine for the other states didn't stop these kids from landing right smack dab in the middle of hear no virus, see no virus, speak no virus land. Meanwhile, claiming it will free up medical service, he has immediately seized on taking away a constitutional right to privacy and halted all abortion procedures, even those done at home with pills, for an undetermined amount of time.

Explain how thousands of pregnant women are going to receive prenatal care and safe births during a Pandemic and doctors are stretched thin?
Where Millions of families have not only lost their Jobs, but their Health Insurance as well and can't possibly face a full on hospital birthing bill?

Texas already has the highest Maternal Mortality rate in the Nation.

Gov Greg Abbott is actually placing American Women in mortal danger over ideology.
This IS murder.

This popped up on the Guardian three minutes ago:

In Washington DC, the White House’s coronavirus briefing has begun with an overview of the administration’s new “enhanced counter-narcotics operations”. According to the US president Donald Trump, the forces fighting drug traffickers will also have equipment to protect them from contracting coronavirus.

Key Medical Supplies Were Shipped From U.S. Manufacturers to Foreign Buyers, Records Show
While much of the world moved swiftly to lock down crucial medical supplies used to treat the coronavirus, the U.S. dithered, maintaining business as normal and allowing large shipments of American-made respirators and ventilators to be sold to foreign buyers.

The foreign shipments, detailed in dozens of government records, show exports to other hot spots where the pandemic has spread, including East Asia and Europe.

Subways / mass transit in NY (and NJ / CT - you can draw concentric circles around NYC and see the impact). vs. cars in LA.  WA was a specific carrier to a retirement home for starters.

i would agree, the mass transit. there are about 1.5m people who go through penn and grand central station alone each day.
