More Wikileaks.

Essential now that Egypt has shut down it's internet and mobile phone services.

I disagree. The very people who are in power now (only just) are no better than fundamentalists themselves. Although some fundamentalists may try and fill the vacuum in the short term, I really believe the people there want fairness and a government they can trust. If fundamentalists took over and they people were not happy they would soon boot them out too. A good friend of mine who has been in Egypt quite a while over the last few months was saying just recently that there is a growing movement there, especially amongst the young that they want to be part of a more modern world. The internet has really opened up some people's eyes in these sort of countries, information has been easier to find and slowly these people are waking up and saying enough is enough. This may sound off topic but my friend who was there is gay and from his experience and from his conversations with other gay and gay friendly Egyptians they are sick and tired of the opression they face. Away from the people in power many of the people are changing their views about many many issues, their own religion, their sexuality, women's rights being three major ones and so the last thing the people want is a fundamentalist power. They won't stand for it, that's my impression anyway. We shall see.

Yep, once upon a time, the Soviets used to exploit this kind of unrest to their advantage against the West.  It is safe to say that whatever feelings are bubbling to the surface are local and homegrown.  The Russians today are probably just as apprehensive of this kind of unrest as we have always been and are not thrilled with the prospect of civil unrest of this kind, because they have become targets of the fundamentalists themselves.

This is a brand new / old dynamic.

This is an interest cable from wikileaks too.
