I have to say that early on I was like, "Ok we are behind in vaccination but there are other countries with huge numbers of cases that really need it." But of course the developing nations are still left behind and returning citizens are one of the sources of our current wave. So yeah, the Federal government really shouldn't have hosed up the vaccination program and that wasn't their reasoning. Their reasoning seems to be that Astra-Zeneca is slightly less expensive and they thought it would be good for business to have it manufactured in Australia. The lockdowns are frustrating but, we learned is that they will only be longer and more people will die if you wait.

Stop me if I said it before, but my nightmare scenario is that the rampant covid and resulting mutations in the unvaxxxed population result in something that the vaccinations don't protect against and it runs like crazy through the people who did the right thing and got vaccinated. The way to slow mutation is to reduce the number of cases.

Correct. Given this information, antivax people still insist on taking the wrong stance. Just yesterday, I was in a little back-and-forth with someone who pre-vaccine was often heard shouting "masks don't protect me" and we said no, they protect others. So now the vax is out and the very same person said "I guess you're not aware but the vaccine doesn't protect others so get it for yourself and let me choose" so a year ago they wouldn't bother because it was only to protect others and now they won't bother because it's only to protect ourselves. Joke's on her though: the vaccine protects everyone if most of us get it. Otherwise it's a sand castle and eventually no one is protected. *sigh*

Right, but I was under the impression that you were noting the 13% or so vaxxed+hospitalized. I don't think it's out of line, considering the raging infection rate among unvaxxed who are not taking any precautions anywhere.

The math people around here can probably help figure out what a 95% efficacy translates to in the real world, but nobody said it would be impossible to catch covid if you're vaccinated. If I'm vaccinated, you're vaccinated, and one of us catches it, it wasn't from me to you or vice versa. With a more-virulent strain running roughshod over the 1/2 the country that's unvaxxed, and those people have no qualms about sharing the virus with anyone and everyone, of course there's going to be a maximum level of breakthrough cases. I'm assuming the 95% figure was based on masking and distancing efforts in place, not fuckit-lets-party superspreaders everywhere.

Perhaps because even the Okies smart enough to get vaccinated are still dumb enough to believe that makes them bulletproof.
