I'm with Debbie Downer haresfur on the potential for Trump to not care about a lot of social issues, but hadn't really thought about him using those as bargaining chips. Oy. That's the thing. Coaxial wrote: I thank you and ScottFromWyoming for giving me a brief thumbnail of Pence. He didn't get much play on the East Coast prior to Trump's picking him, so I blame part of my ignorance on that. But I also confess a bit of laziness: VPs typically don't shake up a campaign much, and after the election it's a job no one thinks much of, least of all the Veep himself. This news about Pence shakes up my list. I'd have to put Cruz first, because while hellaciously obnoxious he has government experience as Senator (pathetically little experience, and serving as likely the most loathed man in Congress) and as Solicitor General of TX. Cruz is better informed about the world than Trump. His ego isn't as unmanageable as Trump's and he has more restraint than Donald. Cruz wouldn't be likely to cause an international crisis or disaster; Trump is. Cruz and Pence also strike me as more aware that politicians have to work within a network of other politicians. I don't think Trump understands how much cheerleading, negotiating, horse-trading and unselfish leading a President has to do. Trump will have a very difficult time putting Trump after other people and causes. He's already claiming that he won't have to give up control of his businesses while serving as President. He's in for a nasty shock there. ScottFromWyoming wrote: Well I voted for Johnson, so I made that pick. Based 100% on his anti-war position + social issues position.
Did you see this WaPo article? Not a pretty picture. Johnson at his peak should never have been more than a state Congressman. His 2016 campaign plan for changing the tax code would have created a regressive tax on the poor, and his attempt to counter that regressiveness would have created the largest entitlement program in the federal government. And as I pointed out to Lazy8, those "Aleppo moments" occurred during his second campaign for President as the Libertarian candidate. I don't know wtf Gary was doing after he left the NM Governorship in 2003 and before he campaigned in 2012, but I imagine he had plenty o' time to work on his cluenessness. He failed the Libertarian party badly. Personally, I don't think Libertarianism is a workable philosophy on which to base a party aspiring to win the White House or implement effective federal programs. I suspect you wanted a diminished, more accountable government via Johnson. Unfortunately, you got Donnie. At a personal level, that's like waking into a parallel universe where you're a teenager stuck in a small town you hate, working the graveyard shift at a minimum wage job for the a-hole bully stuck in his high school glory days. In terms of a government, the Trump administration is going to feature a lot of bad decisions, corruption, economic troubles and lack of accountability. I know you have kids, so something like global warming has to concern you. Trump's already waffling on that but he's likely going to be a disaster on that issue.

Neither have I, but everything that comes out of his mouth is appalling. The blandness of him is what makes him more fearsome. Cruz walks into the room and shouts "I'm a dick and I want you to just die." Pence doesn't talk about it much but at the end of the day he's going to sign those orders too.
