I had a picture but now I can't find it. It's with my dad and a few other hockey players. Back in the day. Jacques Plante is in the picture. Too poor to have skates, Plante was wearing boots.
The building is historic (1962 world's fair, where the space needle is), so they are leaving the roof and most of the facade, but they will gut the interior and dig down below the current structure to fit the arena. It should be pretty cool. But the location sucks. The path to get there from the highway goes through what we call the "Mercer mess". During rush hour it can take 30+ minutes to travel just over a mile from the highway to the arena. And it is always clogged because the alternate routes aren't any good either.
This report is a couple weeks old, but it says the Key Arena will be demolished to make place for the new arena.

Yep! Pretty cool to finally have a team here. It will make the Vancouver train trips that much more fun. Down side is that due to politics and local BS, they are using the old Key Arena. It is city owned, so they blocked another stadium plan and forced an ownership group to use the Key. Key is fine, and will probably be sharp after the remodel, but it sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood with limited parking. It is also bounded on all sides by the worst traffic in the region. The city council thinks everyone is going to take transit or bikes to get there. Weeknight games are going to be hell getting in and out of. There is also a bit of an issue where they took 25000 ticket deposits (and another 8K or so deposits for the waitlist) , but the stadium is only slated to have 17000 seats.
No matter though. We'll have a team and I'll be able to see them in Vancouver.
Now I hope we can get the same favorable expansion draft terms as Vegas did.

I'm always surprised how many people know the words to 'O Canada' when we hit the local WHL games here. The attendees are a pretty hard core blue collar/ Navy base town group, so it is unexpected. Maybe it's our proximity (~ 70 miles to the border), or maybe it's the number of Canucks that we have in town. Either way it is refreshing. And speaking of, I need to go pick some games to attend.
