Yeah, Brown Sugar isn't exactly an outlier.

I don't either, Mick, I don't either.

"God knows what I'm on about on that song. It's such a mishmash. All the nasty subjects in one go." That's what Mick Jagger had to say about "Brown Sugar" in 1995 when Rolling Stone asked him just what was up with what was one of their most controversial songs.

According to Jagger, he wrote "Brown Sugar" while he was in Australia, working on the movie "Ned Kelly" and attempting to rehabilitate himself after a hand injury. He was surprised it was as successful as it was, and added, "I would never write that song now. ... I would probably censor myself. I'd think, 'Oh God, I can't. I've got to stop. I can't just write raw like that.'"

There are plenty of fascinating tidbits in the song's history. It was written about a strange combination of sex, slavery, and interracial relationships, which makes it even stranger that it was recorded in Alabama — a state that, AV Club notes, had laws on the books making interracial marriage illegal until 2000. The first time it was played in public was just as controversial: It debuted at their ill-fated free concert at Altamont.

According to Vulture, it's not just the listeners who think the lyrics are a little bit too edgy and racist and misogynistic. Jagger regularly changes them when it's performed in concert, and both he and Keith Richards distance themselves from the content of their own song.

Is Keith's the only voice of reason left in the wilderness?

The Rolling Stones remove 'Brown Sugar' from tour setlist over lyrics depicting slavery
Cydney Henderson, USA TODAYWed, October 13, 2021, 7:47 PM

The Rolling Stones may have dubbed their tour "No Filter," but the iconic rock band has filtered out one of their most popular songs from their setlist.

The band retired their 1971 hit song "Brown Sugar" from their current tour, for now, over "conflicts" surrounding the controversial lyrics that depict slavery, rape and drugs, guitarist Keith Richards confirmed to The Los Angeles Times.

"You picked up on that, huh?" Richards told the outlet after he was asked why the band has refrained from playing it. He added that he doesn't understand the controversy.

"I’m trying to figure out with the sisters quite where the beef is," Richards said. "Didn’t they understand this was a song about the horrors of slavery? But they’re trying to bury it. At the moment I don’t want to get into conflicts with all of this."

Too bad. I saw them first time in '76 in Cologne (Sporthalle Deutz, Love You Live tour), when I'd just turned 15. Waiting in front of the venue, since 2 p.m., the concert was to begin at 9 p.m., and they started playin' no earlier than 11.30 (after the opening act, forgot who they were, whomever Fritz Rau had organized for the warm-up, no info given on the ticket).

My last train home went at 00.30, and my dad would have ripped off my head, if I'd missed that one. So, sadly I went after they'd only opened up after three songs or so, after 'Get Off My Cloud' I think, from the heat of being only few yards away from the front of stage, amid loosely clad young  women and the constant looks of Bill Wyman (was he looking at me, or the girls?)... to the cold, and quite lonely train-station of Köln-Deutz (Shäle sick).

Back in those times!

Later, I got to see them in 1981 in what was then West-Berlin (Waldbühne, what a great location, Still Live tour), and in 1996 in Hamburg (Trabrennbahn, Bridges To Babylon tour)...   -   so far! - Next time will be in heaven?!
