A Dirge for David Bowie

Why are the stones mute?
Where is their cry for mercy?
Why is the sky still blue,
Why does the loveless Sun yet burn?
Insensate world, idiotic sky,
The one we loved has died.

His giant heart is rent,
His mind teams no more
With brilliant folly.
All that is lost, nevermore
To beguile our woes.
Unfeeling world, idiot sky,
The one we loved has died.

He sang for you, he sang for me.
He held up beauty as a gift
Invented in a universal mind.
A joke, a shadow dance,
A memory of a lost kiss.
Cold ashes, now, and worthless.
Brute world, idiot sky,
The one we loved has died.

Overheard on an NPR show sign-off earlier today, paraphrased:  Whatever else in your news today, know this—The earth is approximately 4.5 Billion y.o. And if you’re listening to this, count your blessings that you spent part of that time on the planet with David Bowie.

Very touching.

Agreed! Blessings counted. Check! He's not all that much older than me. Thanks for the wake up call!!

I spent a lot of time in record stores. Maybe it's just so un-Bowie I never noticed it.

That is the very first release. in this instance the US release came out before the UK release. Then Bowie changed labels and the next batch had different artwork. The Victorian building on the cover was supposedly of an insane asylum in Texas.
