dude you can't blame the people for the way they vote

look at the candidates the political parties hold up

there's more variety in nascar

unless you're suggesting they use reason and logic

and when is the last time that happened?

like never

Throw back the little ones
And pan-fry the big ones
Use tact, poise and reason
And gently squeeze them

I second this. I was just telling my sweetie the other day that property taxes (on a very modest home 12 miles from prime locations) could very well drive us out of Austin financially. The politics is just the shit-flavoured icing on the dog turd cake.  If it weren't for the amazing music scene, well, never mind.  I'd still be here.

As a Texan, I agree with you! I don't blame you a bit: those issues are international embarrassments.

It's worse than you think. The State, that is the GOP-dominated State, is actively taking away local control from city governments. Specifically Austin, called out by name(!) but other cities and counties as well. For example, we voted to ban single-use plastic bags in our county. They tangle in fences, blow down the street like tumbleweeds, etc. For awhile it was a big hassle to bring bags, but the stores went back to paper and to re-usable plastic bags for a small fee. Now the Legislature is back in town, and they see the bag bans as tantamount to Communism. Forget our schools are chronically underfunded to the point of Federal court orders. Forget property taxes skyrocketing, driving people out of their homes. Oh wait, that's only happening in Austin, so screw 'em. Ideology has supplanted reason, it's ridiculous.
