You posted three sites repeating the same  (inaccurate) quote, unsourced. Repetition is not credibility.

Here's the quote Scott found:

"Our entire much-praised technological progress, and civilization generally, could be compared to an ax in the hands of a pathological criminal." This is footnoted, asigned to correspondence with someone named Zanger (presumably his friend Heinrich Zanger) but the reference isn't available online. This was undoubtedly translated from the original German, so it has one degree of separation from reality built in. But it has some way to verify that it has some connection to Einstein.

All the ones on that page - yes. The publisher of the page, an individual not claiming to represent Stanford in any way, acknowledges that they should be treated with caution. Just because they happen to have web space at a university means nothing, I'm sure I could find UFO 'evidence' on many university sites in people's private web space - that doesn't mean UFO's are real (or not).

I'm not sure Primal Scream can necessarily be regarded as an academic authority, much the same applying to Mr. Gandotra's blog. The third site has no context or attribution, so proves nothing either way.

So do you think all of the quotes at the Stanford website are urban myths, because of the disclaimer?  Or just that one?  Did you look at the other two proofs?  Do you think all three of those sites host urban myths?  What suggests in the quote to you that Einstein did not say it?  Here's more academics who use the quote...  but you believe what you want...  I am hungry and I gotta go eat...

Bearing in mind this is at the top of the Stanford page :

"Note: This list of Einstein quotes was being forwarded around the Internet in e-mail, so I decided to put it on my web page. I'm afraid I can't vouch for its authenticity, tell you where it came from, who compiled the list, who Kevin Harris is, or anything like that. Still, the quotes are interesting and enlightening. "

I'll continue to believe it to be a webism.

If it were here, I'd be convinced!

Well I've just spent half an hour googling around for this quote and haven't found any context or actual attribution, so I suspect it's a web urban myth type thing.

The second example more than the first, but yeah. OK, he said something like it.

Which Einstein probably never said. Unless you have a source nobody else can find.

I don't know who this is attributed to, but it's on the tag of the tea I'm brewing:
