I get what you're saying. But think of it this way: most of the customs involved with the dead are for the living. The grave gives them a place to come and remember you, to mourn and think about what a swell guy you were and what a good life you lived. You could probably argue that it's inconsiderate and even arrogant to deprive your loved ones of a special place to grieve.

Mike Royko once wrote that when he died, he wanted his body to be placed in a Hefty bag and dropped off at the end of the bar at the (then one and only) Billy Goat Tavern.  IIRC he wrote cryptically that "they'd take care of the rest".

I always liked that idea.

I don't get a lot of the wedding traditions. Like the whole "remove the bride's garter" thing. That's just creepy - why are we messing around under this woman's skirt in public? I went to one where the guests were trying to get the groom to take off her garter with his teeth. (Really? In public? In front of her parents? NO, no. No. Save it for the honeymoon.)

Plus do I want to catch this married woman's underwear? I do not. At least the women get to catch a nice bouquet. And the whole "pay to dance with the bride/groom" thing is just beyond strange. 

I'm gonna have a viking funeral. 

On the other hand - being buried in a simple pine box without all the chemical embalming would probably be best - dust to dust sort of thing.  Where as cremation takes fossil fuel being burned to incinerate.
 
Still, I kind of like the idea of cremation too.
