Woman leaps from horse to save trio from a rip, two weeks after fatal drowning at the same Victorian beach

... Mr Hill said he understood the incident on Easter Sunday involved two teenage girls and their father.

He said the girls were understood to be capable swimmers who were caught in a rip.

The father entered the water to help his daughters but fell into trouble too.

Mr Hill said a trained lifesaver was riding her horse along the beach when she saw the situation unfold.

"She noticed the father running out with his socks on, and thought, 'That's weird'."

She climbed off her horse and swam out to the group to calm them down.

Mr Hill said the group floated in the rip while on-duty lifeguards came to assist.

Two other males saw the situation unfold and also swam out to help bring the two girls and the man to shore.

Two other people passing by also swam out to help bring the group in.

"They weren't in a great way when they got to the beach. They had taken in a bit of water and had gone into shock," Mr Hill said.

That's scary for a desert-dweller to think of but I love how the horse is mentioned several times.

Shamrock is a retired race horse. On this day, he forgot he was retired, or that I'm not that experienced a rider and decided to take me for the ride of my life. Please excuse the bad language and girly screams at the end...

"You embarrass me fer the nay-bers."

Not being snarky here: I love the accent. That's deep South to these New England ears.

I'm guessing the horse wanted a bath. Sort of like when someone writes on a dusty car "wash me."

Do horses normally moo like that?

in slang phrase gin up "enliven, make more exciting," 1887 (ginning is from 1825), perhaps a special use of the verb associated with gin (n.2) "engine," but perhaps rather or also from ginger up in the same sense (1849), which is from ginger in sense of "spice, pizzazz;" specifically in reference to the treatment described in the 1811 edition of Grose's slang dictionary under the entry for feague:

... to put ginger up a horse's fundament, and formerly, as it is said, a live eel, to make him lively and carry his tail well; it is said, a forfeit is incurred by any horse-dealer's servant, who shall shew a horse without first feaguing him. Feague is used, figuratively, for encouraging or spiriting one up.

Ah. She'd buy betadine if she only had a dollar; she'd live out in the pasture if she only had a tail?

With talk about the Derby, I realized there isn't really any good horse thread.

In any case, Shadow says he could beat them all.
