House passes legislation decriminalizing marijuana
The question remains: Will it all go up in smoke when it heads to the Senate?

The House of Representatives voted Friday to approve legislation that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and remove criminal penalties for certain cannabis-related offenses by a vote of 220-204.

——————————————

That is a narrow vote.   Should we expect this kind of legislation to pass the Senate now or is 2030 to 2040 a more realistic time line?

The discovery prompted a swift operation by groundskeepers to find, uproot and destroy the plants sneakily seeded in the Parliament’s garden in the capital, Wellington.

“We are weeding out the weed,” Trevor Mallard, the speaker of Parliament, assured New Zealanders in a statement.

Selenium, as I have long understood its importance as a supplement, is the required catalyst needed to help or unlock the full benefits of other supplements such as Vitamin E and some others.  I have taken it for some 30 odd years or so since I learned of its purpose for that reason. I used to know the full details off the top of my head but would have to look it up now.  Just one of those things.  Other supplements still taken since this enlightenment are zinc and Vitamin C.  I have long ago quit taking E as an oral supplement due to problems with its sourcing and certain side affects.

My current list of supplements.

Selenium
Vitamins C, D and K
Zinc
Magnesium

Turmeric
Aged garlic extract
Ubiquinol (Co Q10)

Magnesium is another tricky one, with lots of quality issues.

The thing about trace nutrients is that you have to hit the sweet spot between too little and too much.

Here ya go westslope for an example of my point about making regulations.

 kurtster wrote:
I would just say that as with voting, it is not about who votes, but who counts the votes.  Same with "rules".  It is more about who writes them and why than what they actually are.  I would say where there is a "rule" that means someone else has the last word, unless you are the one writing the rules.

The same applies in commerce.  They are called entry barriers.  The ones writing those rules make it as hard as possible to start up a new business to compete with their existing businesses.  Happens everywhere, federal, state, county, local levels.

westslope wrote:
kurtster, I think we can agree that legislated regulations are necessary for public safety and for creating a fair level playing field for producers and service providers.

In principle, yes.
The ambiguity is over 'rules'.

Norms?  Social conventions?  Legislated regulations?  Laws?

Any of those / all of those ?  It's an analogy of an observation of "the system".  How about this ... rules are only for how to play the game, not how to win the game.  The rules are made so complicated that you spend all your time just trying to figure out what they are and how to comply and never end up playing the game.  A fools errand / Gordian Knot

Inside California's Cannabis Crisis

Small weed farms are facing extinction under oppressive regulations, high taxes, and a statewide collapse in cannabis pricing

You mean Ohmsen made a second language mistake with a popular slang expression such as gang bangers?   Oh.

Yes, we have lots of gang bangers up here in Canada-land — in part due to our immigration policy and the slow, difficult 'integration' that results.  They are mostly no longer involved in weed.  For what remains of the black market, volume and some expertise is required.   US hip hop culture helped glorify the gang banger culture up here too.  There was, perhaps still is, a big influence on First Nation gangs.  The USA, always a great neighbour and friend, also helped with the illegal exportation of firearms.

The great thing about criminals going up scale?   Less violence.  Less threat to the security of the public.

And you are right that gang bangs appear to always involve alcohol.

In so much as American lack of legal gun control and extreme interpretation of second amendment rights are entrenched in government policy, the exportation of guns, violent culture, and attacks on allies, even if by non-government groups are illustrations of how the US is engaged in terrorism.

As an aside, I worked briefly out of the UFW AFL-CIO boycott office in East L.A. in the early 1980s.  The crash house was in West L.A.   I was stunned at all the stripped vehicles lying around on concrete blocks.  Was not impressed with the air quality; tried to get out and run before 7AM before the air quality got even worse.

Even more impressive was the massive chip on the shoulder of some of the Chicano staff.

So how do you choose which laws/rules you follow?  Do they shift as the day moves along? How many apply to everyone other than you?  How can you justify being mad at any other rule breaker when this is your own policy?
