The Tokens sang at my senior prom in NJ in 1969. Besides "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", their repetoire that night were TV commercial jingles. Whatever!
So glad you reminded me! If anyone out there is interested in learning about the history of rock, this podcast has been going for years, one song - and its history - at a time.
And his research is similar to Mark Lewisohn's exhaustive research on the Fab Four.
The episode dealing with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was fascinating!
"Episode ninety-two of A History of Rock Music in Five Hundred Songs looks at âThe Lion Sleeps Tonightâ by The Tokens, and at a seventy-year-long story of powerful people repeatedly ripping off less powerful people, then themselves being ripped off in turn by more powerful people, and at how racism meant that a song that earned fifteen million dollars for other people paid its composer ten shillings. "
Give it a listen, and then start at the beginning of the whole series. I'm totally loving it.
Here's the home page, where he's up to #165: Dark Star, by the Grateful Dead.
The previous one, which I haven't listened to, was White Light/White Heat and went more than three hours!
My brother has been rigging lights and stage for bands and tours for 30 years. Rolling Stones. All of them. He says the two best live acts he ever heard were The Cure and Conway Twitty, both in the early 90's. Pretty remarkable.
that's awesome to hear! agreed, quite the contrast, but i'd definitely see both if i had the chance.
A friend who sees/knows every musician (Forbert calls him to talk about how hard parenting is, Margo Timmons calls to him from the stage) recently said that the BEST show heâs ever seen was a recent Dolly show. Wow.

That's an odd pairing, but I would have been down to sample both. I have a good friend who is a dyed-in-the-wool, obsessive metalhead. He saw The Cure on the Disintegration tour and still to this day says it's the best concert he's ever gone to. They are jaw-droppingly good and the addition of Reeves Gabrels to the lineup was a stroke of genius.
Serious artistry is hard to deny.
Also, I'm a lover of music in general, but Disintegration fed me for awhile too there in my late thirties. I wasn't new to the band but I guess the music was so meloncholicious and good and I was
in a place and it caught me up. I'll sing Plainsong at an open mic if someone knows it and plays the keys lol. With a spacey mix on the harmonica. What a thrill.

Yeah, we came with ponchos & umbrellas, but it never mustered up more than a light drizzle. We listened to most of their discography during the drive to Denver, and it's kind of reignited an obsession for me. It's neat to think that a band I latched onto at 13 years old can still wow.
Great to know it still excites!
We may have latched at the same time

Fantastic!
I was worried you might get rain for your show, but that might have made it even better.
I have been running through their entire catalog for the past week on my walks to and from work every day
Mornin' RPeeps!
Mornin'!
