Man, I pulled out the Red remaster from the Road to Red box last night and there was some serious air drumming going on in my office.
End of the story: Crutchfield were great about accepting the return, waiving any fees since I had the original box.
Thought about buying a replacement then realized that the DVD hooked up to the TV literally never gets used - and it's easy to move. So left the cables that connect it to the amp/TV - but moved the player to my office and hooked up the coaxial connection and now...
Yer 0 for 2. There is some inherent design flaw, which my primary guess is it is still a buffer issue of some kind. I'd return both while you are able to and find something else.

Doggone it. In my NAD amp/CD saga, I did try a different optical input (DVD player) and there was no delay in processing the sound. Ergo, the amp is capable of accepting digital input properly. So the problem is both CD players don't push digital sound out at the beginning of the song? I've been trading mail with the NAD guy, so we'll see what's next.

Have you tried inputting a computer via the USB input to see if it also does the same thing there as well ?
USB/computer input working fine. If I put in, say, Abbey Road - the first two secs are silence, then it plays through the rest of the disc no problem. If I decide to skip to another song that song loses the secs. Same if I hit the back/restart the song button. That's making me think it's the CD player instead of the amp. There's a clog in its digital decoding/output. The analog output (RCA) is fine.
OK. Do you have any other players that have a digital output like a dvd player you can plug in to the digital inputs ? If they do not have any problems then it would be safe to say it is the CD player itself.

RCA ports sounds fine. That means that when I put in an mp3 disc (174 songs of the 1970s from Time-Life) every time it random plays a song I lose the beginning. Grr. Gonna have to drop a message to the NAD folks, since that’s unacceptable. Yes, I could just use the RCA ports but still WTF?

Yeah, not having the digital inputs operating properly is a big deal. Hopefully it's a bug that can be dealt with.
Regarding dealing with power failures, time for a UPS for your audio gear. They will give you time to turn them off and also help prolong their life by minimizing power surges and what not. Especially since you live in an area where the power can be turned off just because it is windy outside.

Thanks. Sadly, Iâm familiar with the factory reset on my other NAD. When thereâs a power failure I have to do that and set up reconfiguring of the whole thing. Fortunately, I have mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency.

Yeah. Only reason I mentioned HDMI ARC is because some devices with that feature have issues that affect other parts of the system. I have a JBL soundbar with an ARC feature that never worked properly and caused problems with the TV. Just skipped it and used toslink to the soundbar instead. Our current TV has better built in sound. The soundbar just sits now. Another piece of audio gear collecting dust.
Maybe it's just me and my luck, but I have never been able to get the ARC / pass thru features to work properly.
I did a lot of searching last night for known issues with the player and / or the amp and came up empty.
Best I could do was come up with those trouble shooting suggestions.
The only other possibility I left out was trouble that could come from the HDMI ARC connection. Those can cause problems that make no or very little sense. Similar to bus powered USB devices that get very wonky and can cause problems in the food chain.
