We went in from the Estes Park side in mid Sept on a weekend.  Was busy at the lower parts but not bad.  We took that one way Fall River Road up to the top.  There were people but is was comfortable.  Pretty wild to us at the top.

Yep.  My first trip to Palm Springs as a kid we took 74 home all the way through the Cleveland National Forest to PCH.  A very hairy road and my Dad really liked to scare the shit out of us.  My Mom was used to his driving having lived through his nail biters over Mt Tamalpais on our trips to Stinson Beach.  We took Rt 66 out to Palm Springs.  No Interstates yet back then.

I used to think so before moving from the northeast to Colorado last year.    We drove to the top of Mt Washington in New Hampshire a few years ago. White knuckle drive for a guy not liking heights.  And what a difference in weather from the base.

Bellow is from Wikipedia:

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288.2 ft (1,916.6 m) and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River.

The mountain is notorious for its erratic weather. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a windspeed of 231 miles per hour (372 km/h) at the summit, the world record from 1934 until 1996. Mount Washington still holds the record for highest measured wind speed not associated with a tornado or tropical cyclone.

I recently paid $65 for the iconic "This Car Climbed Mt Washington" bumpah stickah. Hit it on a great weather day, I think I could see LaQuinta from there
