There's a long line of cars and they're trying to get through
There's no single explanation, there's no central destination
But this long line of cars is trying to get through
And this long line of cars is all because of you

We don't wonder where we're going or remember where we've been
We've gotta keep this traffic flowing and accept a little sin
So this long line of cars will never have an end
And this long line of cars keeps coming around the bend

From the streets of Sacramento to the freeways of L. A.
We've gotta keep this fire burning and accept a little grey
So this long line of cars is trying to break free
And this long line of cars is all because of me

There's a long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars
Long, long, long line of cars

the perfect fast lane song
this set is fucking excellent William!
Love Cake. Would love it if RP would also play Offspring tunes.  Pretty please?

I've seen them live many times and they are always hugely entertaining and tight. So good.

I think you misspelled "brilliant iconoclasts"
I love the brass riff in this.

Yep... pretty cool.  But a coronet, you wear; a cornet you play :-)

Outstanding student level nonsense....  Do these guys have actual jobs?
Cake is cheesy..,.Cheese Cake!
Cake has something many band try to accomplish and fail to do, a unique sound.
great, a song about sitting in traffic.

what is he going to sing about next?

writing a symphony or being an opera singer?

How many songs have they got about the Beach Boys then??

Feels like it's crying out for a cowbell.
Good Tune!

Yeah, sadly I left Sacramento just as they were breaking. Would have loved to see them live in the early days.
I just sense some existential meaning in this song.  Something about the infinite nature of the universe.

Or LA traffic.
Something good out of Sacramento for a change. Love me some yummy cake!

Cornet maybe? Not a crown, unless that's your intention, in which case, my culpa.
This song always reminds me of Office Space, when he's getting passed with the guy with a walker during the commute to work.
All I could think when this started....

"We have tests...and the tests are beautiful.  Anyone who wants a test can get a test"...

...and this long line of cars...all because of ME.

POTUS
I like the "just good enough" guitar sound :D

Oh wow actual music equivalent of being stuck in traffic.
Should have been performed by Traffic.
I am beside myself - a Cake song I actually enjoy. A tasty piece..
Lovin those horns!
I sing this song in traffic way too often.

I'm with you on the "if others dislike it I might like it more" - and the overall rating has dipped to a 6.8 which means my 8 might have to become a 9....so +1 today and Long Live RP and CAKE!!
Everyone in my long line of cars loves this song.

One of the best bands ever !
Give me some more cake please !
There is a long line of something   but    not      cars.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Hummm...

That horn riff... Wonder if they borrowed it from/were inspired by River of Orchids by XTC.

Pointless, and now time for the PSD
Perfect for this rainy morning long line of cars :)
Like They Might Be Giants, only less funny.
I must confess, I have an extreme prejudice against Cake, and I'm yet to hear any of their songs that I can tolerate.
Daniel Craig/James Bond chuckling and shaking head

Wry disgust and disappointment washed over 007 as he turned away from the sonic stink and towards the PSD button.

"Shake it, stir it, just give me that effin' martini to kill the pain..."
OK, as Fred might say, I'll get me (long) jacket.

That is about how I see them as well.  This is probably my favorite song of theirs though.

Agree
Nice of someone to write a song about what I experience twice a day.
Social comment about automobile pollution?  Long line of cars, all because of you/me, keep the 'fire' burning, accept a little grey?  Just a suggestion on this gloriously grey New England morning.
Love it. Perfect for a road trip out of town.

Love, Love, Love these guys.  Well, I love their music.  And their witty/deep/poetic lyrics.  And they have a horn player.  And they frequently use a vibraslap!  MY GOODNESS PEOPLE!  WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU WANT?!?!?

OK, here you go:  {#Dancingbanana}

By the way, they are fab in person.  Really, they are.
can't believe I'll say this, but.... this isn't nearly as irritating as usual "Cake"   :)

That's because those fellas can actually play instruments. That singer, he can't sing, no sir.
But he does sing the same way in every song. {#Cowboy}

The bright side: Cake has pretty much become a PSDer every time.

Forrest Gump sitting and holding a plate of lasgna

I don't get Cake.  They sound bland or "average", nothing special.  And the vocalist is a bit droning.  Their sound isn't bad but there is just so much more music out there to choose from.
I despise these guys, sorry.

I find myself in a conundrum when it comes to this song.

I love Cake, and I love this song...  have for a long time.

However, due to some bridge construction, a "Long Line of Cars" is my afternoon and morning commute (I work 6pm to 6am in IT for a solar panel manufacturer) sometime around 5:15pm and around 6:30 or 7am two or three days a week.  I really don't want to think about this song every time I hit that construction zone...  I'd hate to ruin what is a fantastic song.

Got it Bill! Referencing CARMAGEDDON with this track.
A perfect tune for the start of the Carpocalypse!

Any band that uses the vibraslap as liberally as these guys deserve kudos!

Delicious tasty Cake!   Tasty lyrics, delicious irony.  Love the horns.  Always a great groove.
I hear a fresh and well crafted musical cake with a thick irony topping.

Delicious.

To me Cake will always have a relaxed kind of head bobbing groove.  It isn't intense or deep, does not require much thought, and just makes me groove a little without even realizing it.

Insincere, lackadaisical, soul-less, mechanical, oh-so-witty and artificially flavored and sweetened.  The musical execution is perfectly textured but has no gut.  I suppose the frat boys love it but to me it's throw away pop, with the artistic value of drain water.

Wow!  I could not disagree more!  These guys are the greatest.

Mmmmmm Cake! great track.

Ever had the Barefoot Contessa's chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing? I'd eat a chocolate cake made with that recipe for the rest of my life and never get bored. Sometimes a recipe stays the same because it is actually pretty damn good. But then there's always someone out there who doesn't like sweets.

Sure, I hear where you're coming from, but this is a common knock on groups that come around with a unique and original sound.  They kind of get knocked for that sound after they've gotten folks used to it.  The Tragically Hip had the same thing said about them, but they kept at it, and they kind of evolved, keeping their distinct sound without sounding the same as their last albums.  Not an easy line to walk, and I agree that Cake hasn't really gotten there.  However, Cake is just so flat-out cool that I cut them some slack.
Its funny, I like this bands instrumental songs but I HATE this guys voice...

I have always liked Cake. Clean sound, sharp, maybe something mathematical about it sometimes... and actually that appeals to me too. Lyrics, fine, but mostly it's that precision of sound that keeps me coming back for another slice (couldn't help myself :)

Maybe the thing with Cake is like with Zappa or Steely Dan or such.  Either it's the coolest tongue-in-cheek thing you ever dug, and you wanna drop what you're doing and sing along and — or... I don't know, because I dug 'em since way back...  Bought this CD mostly for the outrageous "He is wearing his hat backwards, he is calling you DUDE! " and for sure, the bass line ROCKS in just about every song...
