The continent of Atlantis was an island
Which lay before the great flood
In the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land,
That from her western shores
Those beautiful sailors journeyed
To the South and the North Americas with ease,
In their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbour,
Across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is

But a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from far Atlantis.

Knowing her fate,
Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:

The poet, the physician, The farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice
And let us sing
And dance and ring in the new Hail Atlantis!

Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up,
Oh yeah Oh club club, down down, yeah
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah

What a classic song from my youth.  As well as the standards, Mellow, Sunshine, Hurdy and Maria Magenta. I listened regularly growing up. But when YES chose Donavan as their opening act in the mid 70's, I was psyched. Just him in a whicker chair and his guitar. Scottish Bliss!

Normally I dislike ignorant negative posts, but when someone replies with a hilarious rebuttal I can appreciate their worth.  Great one, Jake!
I'm still laughing my head off
Ataualpa would have appreciare this romantic adspectation.
One of the truly great songs ... pure inspiration, pure genius.

Oh great, Donovan in nothing but his tighties and a pair of brown loafers.
There's an image I'll never be able to un-see!    : (
Bring on the drugs now, quickly please!!

So-so song then, still is.
incredibly beautiful song and lyrics. Donovan. beauty. eternal. Once upon a time, in my PUNK days I would have skipped the intro. Not these days.

Of course , you Mutt, if you don't like it  youz can  Go Home and Get Your Shine Box!

You're just upset because the Internet Troll didn't make the cut to be on one of the 12 ships

This is the most appropriate, and I think best comment here.  It makes the right point, efficiently and succinctly.

Even Bill chimed in to call the song "over the top" and "absurd".   I like lots of stupid songs.  Doesn't mean they're not stupid.  Hilariously so, in this case...

Bill should follow this up with "Stonehenge" by Spinal Tap

No, he/she was right.  It's bad.  Get over it.

And the ship he was on sunk off the coast of Mar A Lago.
Please play 39 after this.
Don't make them like that indeed. Made me LOL (not good as I am work)
RIP Billy Batts - had to be put down though because of his...paw.... the hoof!

Dang but this has not aged well. There was a lot of amazing music from the late 60s but there were a lot of "full of oneself" embarrassments too. This is one of the latter, furshur!

Wish we could fast forward past the Spinal Tap intro.
Is it just me, or is there some coincidental passing resemblance to the chorus here and to that of Hey Jude  ? Asking for a friend.

And what else did your parents say when you were born?
Just love the Glasgow accent in the spoken intro.
Hey xcranky-yankee! I had the same reaction in the same circumstances.... just now

This gets my vote for funniest post of the year and them some.  (Scroll to original for context.)

I remember hearing this when I was 9 or 10 when it first came out. I giggled too and wasn't high. Its given me a chuckle every time I've heard it since. "Hail Atlantis!"
Groovy

Come on, folks. The fantasy was a good inspiration for a cool song, that’s all.
Oh, man. The dope must've been really good back in the day.

From this 2019 viewpoint it's so hard to listen to this and try to put it into a perspective where he was singing from a point of Belief not humour or irony. Then again Plant and Page had no problems with weaving Gollum and the Dark Lord into their rock'n'roll. Times were more innocent, or at least accepting, within their slice of reality.

I am way too irony poisoned in 2020 to see this as anything but wildly corny. The self-assurance and confidence to go up to strum a few chords and speak that intro poem is unimaginable to me.

great song
Brings back memories...so cool.
Another favorite from Futurama is "In the year 2525".

Scorcese love to juxtapose classic tunes over violent, intense scenes.  The first thing I thought of was Billy Batts getting beat up.

GREAT SONG!  LOVE DONOVAN!  With all due respect to both parties - I think Robin Williams was chaneling Donovan in Mrs. Doubtfire.  It just jumped out at me!

Donovan’s music does not improve with age!
Oh, man, long time no hear it! 10, of course (since 1969, the magic year).

Nice nautical puns there in that post, matey!
 Mellow Yellow?

Uh oh.
LOVE this song, haven't heard it for far too many years. Thanks RP for playing it.
First time I've heard this on RP, but I'm familiar with this track and I've always liked it. In its stoned hippie lyrics, it's more unique, thoughtful and evocative than some might believe. Which is one reason I've always liked it. Who were the rest of the 12? The great Egyptian age was over 4,000 years ago. And it's a remnant? Food for thought. Of course, my fav line is  And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind. That's surely more true now than 50 years ago.
Still, I've never fully grasped quite what the song is *about*.
Hippy dippy but ya gotta love it. Reminds me of pining over my first girlfriend in like 4th or 5th grade at an art fest in Austin, Texas called "Fiesta". I was hanging out but too shy to talk to her. I remember hearing this song over the speaker.
I saw him open for Yes (Going for the One tour) and he was promoting his latest record ("Donovan" which was quite good).

He did this and I got shivers when he said "Hail Atlantis..." along with every single other person in the auditorium.

It was really special seeing him, honestly. The folks that were the right age to see Yes were also the right age to remember and appreciate how good Donovan is/was. His Sutras album is also quite pleasant.
Should have left this with other moldy oldies
donovan
Hail Atlantis!

Can we please start playing this again?

I saw Donovan in concert, but he did not play this one. I think that performance was before Atlantis sank.
Can\'t here this without thinking of my favorite movie, Goodfellas....
So many good Donovan songs... except for this one. Jabberwocky (sp?) anyone?
I give up. Which scene from Goodfellas?
