People I know, places I go
Make me feel tongue tied
I can see how, people look down
They're on the inside

Here's where the story ends

People I see, weary of me
Showing my good side
I can see how, people look down
I'm on the outside

Here's, where the story ends
Ooh here's, where the story ends

It's that little souvenir, of a terrible year
Which makes my eyes feel sore
Oh I never should have said, the books that you read
Were all I loved you for
It's that little souvenir, of a terrible year
Which makes me wonder why
And it's the memories of the shed, that make me turn red
Surprise, surprise, surprise

Crazy I know, places I go
Make me feel so tired
I can see how people look down
I'm on the outside

Here's, where the story ends
Ooh here's, where the story ends

It's that little souvenir, of a terrible year
Which makes my eyes feel sore
And who ever would've thought, the books that you brought
Were all I loved you for
Oh the devil in me said, go down to the shed
I know where I belong
But the only thing I ever really wanted to say
Was wrong, was wrong, was wrong

It's that little souvenir, of a colorful year
Which makes me smile inside
So I cynically, cynically say, the world is that way
Surprise, surprise, surprise, surprise, surprise

Here's, where the story ends
Ooh here's, where the story ends

Going through my sock draw and found my old COVID mask....
I do believe that every time I hear this song on RP, I stop what I’m doing, start playing the entire album, and reminisce about my high school and college years.

Wish I could upvote this 1000X
It shouldn't be so, but I've never grown tired of this song.
Incredibly deep song, always manages to make my eyes watery, and that voice, absolute gem!

Hell of a hook.

1990 - this is 32 (!!) years old. It holds up pretty well.

Everytime this song comes on, I have to stop what I'm doing,  and click on the computer to see Harriet...and the others, of course.
I bough this CD in the year of release but I had never heard the band play. I just liked the cover art. I went home, put the CD on and fell in love immediately. Harriet Wheeler's voi ce is amazing, this is my early 90's Indie phase all over again, I can almost smell the strawberry incence and feel the love beads around my neck hehe.
 From Wikipedia:
On 10 October 2014, during an interview on BBC Radio 6 Music's Radcliffe & Maconie radio programme, David Baddiel described Dave Gavurin as his "oldest mate" and stated that "they [Dave and Harriet] are doing music, but whether they ever put that out there, I’ve no idea. They're the most paranoid people about actually putting stuff out there." Fans who have seen the Sundays live will remember hearing one or two tracks that were never released.

In an interview with the C86 Show Podcast released on August 18th 2020, Patrick Hannan revealed that Harriet and David had "never stopped making music" and that there are a number of tracks on which he had played drums. Patrick stated that these recordings may never be released.

Holy cow!
That voice.
One of the best of the 90's, love that voice and to see The Sunday's perform live, oh my, my...
For when you find your mask in the sock draw 5 years from now
Excellent song!!!!

Two out of the last 3 years, my 1st grade teacher wife has experienced just this, many days collapsing in my arms after the end of a school day. This is her 27th year and it's never been as bad as it has for the last 5 years. Hopefully this will be a good one!!!

Sending out good vibes to your wife.

Elementary school teachers shaped my thinking and my life!  Even at age 63, I am so grateful to them.

At 63, you had good shaping. These days not so much. Not even close.

I'm a sucker for a song with jangly guitar!
Perfect pop, what a voice! Love catching those first two notes on the radio, out of the corner of my ear.
I don't want any souvenirs from this year, thank you very much.
Nostalgia smothers me whenever this song comes on, in the best way.
No rating lower than an 8 on this entire album.

The little girl inside my 110kg 40 y old body absolutely agrees.
I wish I could give this song an 11.  10 will have to do.
I'm in love with Harriet Wheeler. I don't care who knows.

My niece is a grade school teacher. Her warning to me: "We're in trouble" (relating to the attitudes of young people now and looking to the future.( in general. Always exceptions.)

Didn't have a big impact on me at the time, though I appreciate it more now.  Breezy college days
Love her voice.

Well it sure did for me back in '93. Hurt like hell for a long long time.
Won't ever be able to hear this song without being reminded of that era.

When the Cranberries came out a few years later I recall everyone saying that they (the Cranberries) were that other Irish band that sounds like the SUNDAYS, and now the SUNDAYS have slipped away.  I really like this album and WILD HORSES is brilliant on this album.  Thanks Bill Music can bring back such great memories.

I'd like to hear some stuff from Static & Silence, which is their best album.
Such a great song! Lovely times Sunday afternoons listening to this track!

Lovely jangle pop.
The only indie album I ever bought - partly because a girl in our student house had a habit of playing it several times a day.

oops, tell a lie...    Hull 4, London 0 also made it into my collection.
hearkening back to when life was so much simpler in college....

Made my day...

Still a shame we haven't been blessed by more songs from Harriet...
Sublime... Here's...where the story ends... Wow; this still has the power to stop me in my tracks and bring tears to my eyes... Amazing!

The 15-year-old is sitting in the family room, quietly singing along.

Makes my heart happy.
Was this really 25 years ago? Good lord, I'm old.
Love Sundays!!!  Brings me back to college.  She has such an amazing voice.  Play more please!

Love the Sundays!  Reminds me of college days!

Sundays on Friday! Love it.

Wow. That voice...probably my favorite female voice of the retro age...

I miss this group, esp. Harriet's beautiful voice *sigh*
I remember when I saw the Sundays in concert in Dallas shortly after they released this album.  We demanded they come back out for an encore.  They thanked the crowed and then explained that they had run out of songs to play for us.  So they played this song again.  It was a great show.  Their later albums were also good.  Seemed like a nice group of folks too.
Awesome song.  Great memories.

Such a light..happy song!  :)

The music gives the illusion of happy - but IMHO, the lyrics are anything but.  This album is filled with songs that have dark meanings wrapped in a totally enjoyable package (10,000 Maniacs also do a good job with this emotional-wolf-in-sheep's-musical-clothing approach) - but not so sugary and pop-y that its disgusting.  (although I know some on this thread will disagree, which is fine)

Love the Sundays, love this album.
OMG! Flashbacked to my wife's (then girlfriend) silhouette, wearing summer dress. Best time of my life. Thank you for this song
Innocence Mission Lite.
SUCKO!
Such a light..happy song!  :)
Part of the soundtrack of my 90's.  Love it {#Music}
What a wonderful, cheerful little tune to hear this morning. 1990? Ah, say it ain't so . . .
Always happy to hear this
good memories...

No, Bjork is an excellent artist.  This music is quite bad.  Reminds me of the Corrs - terrible, airy, aimless, 90s music.

Airy, aimless,... what is so terrible about that
A very good way to start my morning.

I think it's one of the finest symphonies of strings and mercurial, powerful, sultry vocals; impeccable stylings, with finest solid production, ever. And this will forever be that little souvenir of the year that I first heard this: just back from Japan the first time, just back to ski-bum in Summit County for the second time, and -- by no means did the story end -- and I love how it still doesn't...Thanks, RP for playing this!

So good to hear this again on RP. First heard it here several years ago and have loved it ever since.

She got married and had some kids, good for her. Hopefully she won't do a Kate Bush and inflict a horrible album on us years from now.

I consider this CD one of the most under-rated ever.  It's one of my favorites.  This song is the best of course.  I don't know why this never got a lot of recognition.  Wonderful CD, every track.  Totally original.  I think the Innocence Mission owes a lot to the Sundays.
Have always loved this song. But 1990? God, I'm getting old.

Love.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this band. Wish they would make more music.  So sad they don't anymore.
Such a beautiful song. Reminds me of my uni days.
One of my very favorite albums of the 90's. Unfortunately they were shortlived.
3 albums only - what a shame...

Very much so. And that's Harriet Wheeler doing the vocals, English and adorable.

Not your fave: The song or the girl?

The girl was awesome, she loved this band..
Love the song. The melody is very sweet and seductive. The vocalist sounds very little or nothing like Edie Brickell. To me, Brickell's voice is fingernails on a blackboard. This lady's voice is far brighter and more emotive. Was the band English? I know nothing about The Sundays, but her inflection — souva-neaha, terrible yeea — sounds UK not US.
Ahh the Sundays.  RP continues with the highest quality programming!Laughing
Was this really 22 years ago! Feeling a little old right now, unlike this song which is still brilliant.
I miss The Sundays.  David, Harriet, please come back to my ears.
