There are the JJ 'chug' tracks and the JJ 'snarl' tracks. This is one of the latter. There is also a one-off 'Durango' where he goes off to Alpha Centauri for 5 mins+ instead of his usual 3 mins or less- I'd love to find out who changed his normal weed for skunk. Shame there isn't more of that in his ouvre. I have it all and find that there are no rejects, although there are some weaker moments (Humdinger).
I liken his voice to cranberry juice or lapsang souchong - an acquired addictive huskiness.

Don't apologize. JJ Cale and the Tulsa Sound are unique. Eric Clapton proved it when he followed JJ Cale around Tulsa attempting to replicate the sound. He failed but offered "Living on Tulsa Time" as a substitute. And don't worry about walking across the street. Were he still alive, you wouldn't be able to find a seat at the venue.

I got in to JJ way back when because of Clapton, and while I'm a HUGE fan of EC's work and all the variations on guitar playing, I really like how steady JJ was (RIP) with his playing. One of the things I like on this track is the very subtle addition of a few guitar notes, and did I hear a triangle in there too?
I'm bumping my 8 to a 9 today.

Considering the tremendous influence J. J. had on Clapton, I'm certain this song was in Clapton's head when, after spending years covering J. J.'s songs in an effort to master his Tulsa sound, Clapton decided to write his own J.J Cale style song, "Lay Down Sally."
In fact, in order to emulate J. J.'s sound, Clapton hired Tulsa musicians to record the song, saying, "It's as close as I can get, being English, but the band being a Tulsa band, they play like that naturally."
