there's more to a river than water
there's more to a fire than flame
there's more to a prayer than longing
there's more to a sinner than shame

laying low and wasting time
in these days of wine and regret
there's a message in every bottle
that's telling me to forget

ooh, that there's more
yes there's more

(there's more to a river than water
more to a fire than flame
more to a prayer than longing
more to a sinner than shame
more to an ocean than mighty
more to a lover than blame
more to a beggar than wanting
more to a sinner than shame)

sleeping late and falling behind
so much for going straighter
but there are things left to remind me
that I was going to do better

ooh, 'cause there's more
yes there's more

You obviously don't "get it" and like lyrics that are more straight forward.

For me, the song conveys that we all have the ability to offer grace and forgiveness, and that one mistake does not define a person in totality.
GREAT!!  Thanx RP!

Just a comment... David Gilmour plays a pedal steel quite a bit

Also, Steve Howe plays them on various Yes classics.
I love everything about this song.

I like the song and the singer, but the old horizontal gittar really grates on these country-phobic ears after a bit. Too reminiscent of cheesy C&W IMO. My loss, I'm sure.

Have you changed your mind lately fred? I used to abhor the steel but I quite enjoy the way its being used more resourcefully, e.g. on songs like this.
Seeing the Audreys perform live is on my bucket list. Please tour the US!
Sweet voice.
The cover art reminds me somehow of the pictures by Terry Gilliam for Monty Python.

I'd say more like Hunter/Garcia

Thanks for mentioning that! I love Jerry Douglas, so that's on my to-watch list. I've never fully understood why lap steel and pedal steel guitars haven't found more usage beyond country and bluegrass.

Nice song, haven't heard it or the band before....
Love groups from Australia
Shivers!!!! Nice.
Go Adelaide!

Some different Lap Steel Pedal Guitar ...
There are some songs by electronic band, The Orb.
One featuring David Gilmore, I noticed. A special live version maybe...
Also, there is a band called Duet with Theremin that features Theremin and steel guitar.
They are an electronic duo with a somewhat improvisational approach to playing ambient music. Very entertaining to see and hear live. I videotaped a song being performed live with a guest vocalist on vimeo, if you are curious.
And for trivia... an electronic band that recorded a country song... : )
Tammy Wynette is featured singing with the KLF on a version of their song Justified & Ancient.
Fun, actually. It sounds great.

There are some in blues and folk genres, but not very many.  Robert Randolph may be one of the best known; check out his videos - he plays blues, rock and funk stuff.  It is odd that doesn't seem to be widely accepted outside of country/bluegrass genres.
Absolutely amazing, the alt-country rock with sultry singing coming out of Oz these days... The Waifs, too. Love 'em both; love RP, yes!
I fall in love with Taasha Coates every time I hear her voice {#Hug}
Lazy. Want to lay in the grass, look at the clouds, and listen to this.
Very nice, indeed. The Jerry Garcia influence is all over this.

There are a few "outliers" - Robert Randolph (who plays rock, blues, soul, and funk styles) is probably one of the more widely known.
Another great voice. Love me some Audreys.

Apropos of nothing, I saw the Steel Audreys swan song  album release last night. Sad story about Derek Kehler and his girlfriend, but a really nice tribute to him and his vision.
All in all, just good music and he will be missed.
And now, back to your program.

Try watching the "Transatlantic Sessions"... If you still hate "horizontal gittar" after hearing Jerry, I'll pay for the beer when we meet.

Put's me in mind of a young Cheryl Crow vocally...

Really like the cover art!
Thanks to RP, I discovered the Audreys (through this very song). So glad I decided to by this whole disc. Every track is at least decent, many are great, and "Small Things" is transcendent.

Hmm, the songs are in different keys, with different chord progressions, so how exactly did they rip it off?

Right.  Not as good, maybe (in my book), but definitely not the same.

Sounds a bit like Aimee Mann...without the nasal and drone.

Some reason I taste whiskey when listening to this.
