Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

Cheeks as red a a blooming rose
And eyes are the prettiest brown
She's the darling of my heart
Sweetest girl in towm

Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

I wish I had a big fine horse
And corn to feed him on
And Shady Grove to stay at home
And feed him while I'm gone

Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

Went to see my Shady Grove
She was standing in the door
Her shoes and stockin's in her hand
And her little bare feet on the floor

Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

When I was a little boy
I wanted a Barlow knife
And now I want little Shady Grove
To say she'll be my wife

Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

A kiss form pretty little Shady Grove
Is sweet as brandy wine
And ther ain't no girl in this old world
Thats's prettier than mine

Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove I say
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound to go away

Doc Watson is a Legend when it comes to writing songs & telling a story...
More bluegrass please!!!
Folk, bluegrass, country, blues, western, whatever you call his style is I have always loved it!

It's all subjective, of course, but that's the idea :)

That's true but still doesn't explain why that turd Peter Gabriel is being played.
what a lovely clear voice
remember listening to Mum's Kingston Trio record, loved to sing along with them and the medley Shady Grove and Lonesome Traveler was a favorite!
Doc Watson is a wonderful person and an amazing guitarist. Truly a gift to be enjoyed.
Every time I hear this the volume always gets nudged that little bit higher. 8 := 9
People need to learn more that bluegrass and rock and roll grew up together, kind of parallel, and wound up more or less just as good as each other.  Bluegrass wants to sound like it's heading back in time, but it really isn't.
I was so blessed to see Doc in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Lecture Hall. He was touring with David Holt. What a magical evening. David drew out these stories out of Doc which gave insight into his life.
The best line is when David ask Doc what he attributed to his long marriage.
"Perserverance."
nuff said.

RIP Doc

Doc was a musical genius. Much to be learned from him. {#Notworthy}
Saw him once with Merle play at the Louisville/Bill Monroe birthday bluegrass event (not to be confused with the Bean Blossom show). A three day, outdoor, free music festival, with bands from all over the world.

Tent camped on the Indiana side of the Ohio river, at some dreadful KOA. Walked back and forth each day over the bridge. Had a budget of $25 dollars a day.  It was pure heaven!
This song makes me think of Mark Knopfler's "Privateering". I wonder if this song was an inspiration.
Lordy - either he or son Merle played banjo on this one...he played both guitar and banjo.
Here's a version he played with the Kruger Brothers, with Jens Kruger on banjo.

Can any guitarist compare to Doc? It's not just his perfect fingerstyle technique. It's that sweet tone.
Listen to his version of Bonaparte's. Sublime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U2ndKyjCLc
This is a great tune! I love the QMS version also. The only thing is it's way too short!

First time I've heard this one - great stuff. The tune strongly reminded me of Fairport Convention's 'Matty Groves'. After a little research:

The melody is similar to, and possibly based on, that of an old English ballad, "Matty Groves".

Doc Watson performed Matty Groves on his 1966 album, Home Again.

Sure enough, there's a YouTube video of Doc Watson performing Matty Groves live. This version, however, is very different from FP's version.

Shady Grove has been recorded over a hundred times. Here's the Jerry Garcia/Dave Grisman version:

Thanks. I thought it was a maritime classic after hearing in every bar with a musician in Halifax, which, of course, being Halifax, is all of them :)

LRC Channel is good alternative too. {#Music}
Love the banjo on this.
Anytime I hear him play, I just want to break my fingers. Red Rocking Chair might be my favorite album.

I've heard other recordings of this song by different artists on RP, but in my opinion this version by Doc Watson is the best! Bill, please drop the other ones. I'd rather hear the song fewer times than hear any other version - especially Tom Petty's. Thanks!

Love it! (And the next time I hear the other cover of Shady Grove that gets played a lot on RP, I'll probably be sorely disappointed, because it pales in comparison to this one!)
Wow...Doc Watson!

Pure, real, authentic stuff. Nice break.

RIP: Doc and Merle.

love it
Good timing
Just looking at the lineup for MerleFest

You probably saw him at my friends venue The Newberry Opera House.  Doc was a good man and will be sorely missed.

So cool to hear Doc Watson on RP.  A musician of the highest order.
Great... and the Tom Petty / Mudcrutch version is pretty good too!

After listening to a part of Terry Gross' interview with him this AM, this is not the Doc Watson track I would have selected.

Which, then?
No explicit lyrics. No hate speech. No wailing machines. Pure expression of the human spirit.

Nice version of a classic!     {#Biggrin}
