This is a gem!  It's a rare occasion that a remake is better than the original, but add this to list!  Love everything about it.  

That being said, is it just me or is RP playing certain songs on repeat a lot more lately?   I listen to RP at least 4-5 hours most days, so might be a little more sensitive to this... thoughts?  

I noticed they removed the count play stats from the site, so I can't verify it.

Gave it a listen. I think I like this version better. Sounds more raw and fits the lyrics a bit better, but what a great song she wrote!

Many people reading the lyrics probably would indeed need some explanation. :) Like it indeed being a metaphor or something like someone commented here. If metaphor then why mentioning of bed and sexual allusions etc

Here in Texas there are a number of 'Painted Churches', which are beautiful in their own right, but the cemeteries are equally interesting. Babies, children, husband and wife... the stones tell their stories.
Most old Texas cemeteries are segregated. Many of the graves 'outside the fence' have only  a blank metal marker - the names long since washed away, along with their stories.

I have only heard this song a few times so far, but appreciate it more every listen.

Upon reading the lyrics, your right Bill. Sometimes I walk the silent places of cemeteries and read headstones and epitaphs of the dead. It gives me pause to consider the life we all live.  Lessons learned from the past.

Gorgeous countertenor voice, don't hear countertenors much outside of classical music. Strange and disturbing tune beautifully performed. Great contrast between the almost angelic presentation and the deeply haunting lyrics.

Yes, very much so. The voice partly, but more the emotions - difficult to place but intense.

I'm not a fan of Shamir's more usual house/electo/pop style but this one is beautiful and haunting. Reminds me of Billie Holliday. This one paired with "Strange Fruit" would be a great segue.

This song brings tears to my eyes. I will probably die alone, and in many ways we all probably do, but I am comforted that someone wrote a song about providing comfort and love to those who "Lived and Died Alone." Thank you, Shamir Bailey.
