I'm on watch here
So close your eyes and get some rest
I'm here to watch your heart
It's been faulted from the start
I'm the rips in your chest
I'm not an angel,
I never mean to make you cry
Jumping through my hoops
With dissension in the troops
And a smile inside
What's that over your shoulder?
Fear of getting older
Stay with me.
Sing me a love song
From your heart or from the phone book
It don't matter to me
I'm an apple, you're the tree
I won't fall when you're shook
What's that over your shoulder?
Fear of getting older
Stay with me.
It ends with a kiss
It ends with a tear
It ends with the lights up
Bathing our fear
Tell me nonsense
I don't want to see
I saw the lightning cut through the last winter sky of the year
Stay with me
Keep with me...
So close your eyes and get some rest
I'm here to watch your heart
It's been faulted from the start
I'm the rips in your chest
I'm not an angel,
I never mean to make you cry
Jumping through my hoops

This is excellent! A definite Springsteen flare with some cultured ambiance!
Loved their set at Glastonbury this year (2023). Alas, just on BBC tv, wasn't actually there!

So ... like ... they're singing the Phone Book for real?
I love this - and I have heard it here just now taking notice..

hello everyone, radio paradise is very good. I haven't heard it in a while, over 8 years! now it's better than before. big hug from Brazil!
first time i've heard the editors on RP. at last - severely under-rated band.
For me one of so "romantic" band like divine comedy or future islands
So beautiful song and so beautiful voice

September 25th, 2005, my mate Steve and I drove about 1 hour in the rain to see Editors at High Wycombe College (Bucks, UK). There were about 50 people there with the band in the corner. What happened next: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist...
We were fed up that we only heard 2 songs (we had seen Editors supporting others, so knew them) but somehow it was fun to see rock musicians getting bored on a Sunday night in High Wycombe.
The fact they could barely stand, let alone play instruments just added to the rock ‘n roll vibe.
Happy days!
Happy, sane 2021 everyone. 🙏🏼

This is a great song for the background while I work. Thumbs up!
Reading through the comments, I was surprised to see all of the comparisons of his voice to Nick Cave, Michael Been, Hozier, but when the song first started I thought it was one of Springsteen's mellower tunes.

I really love this band. Thank you Bill!

-hehe- Weird choice as 'Editors' implies 'editing' which means somebody -- the author -- gives up some control to the editor.
In this world of pretend or false autonomy, who wants to give up control?
Terrific song all the same.

Patty Griffin could sing the phone book and I would like it, but not his guy. Not bad though.
7 -> 8
Beautiful understated instrumentation, nice melody, and a memorable singing performance. Music for that evening firelight session.

Hands down, the best Editors song of all. Pure masterpiece, pure art.

Absolutely! I had to flip over to the site to see who this was! Thought Dead Can Dance for sure...

I hear Michael Been too. I just love this....it prompted me to an Editors 3 album buying spree. More Editors!
So this is that song that everyone always talks about enjoying listening to someone sing.
Great track - forgotten how much I liked them. Thanks Bill
Next time around, I might to have bump this up. That's a very soulful and evocative tune.
I like it. Nice stuff.

you are all correct he sounds like each of those vocalists put in a blender and slowly mixed to a seedy blend
I like this (smokey rose photo is pretty boss too : )

From print of lyrics; "you shook". should possibly be "your shook" if I heard it right. Mint song!

Guess this proves you can't sing the phone book

Not their best, but i like the british bands like Snow Patrol, Editors, Keane and Coldplay!! This singer has a very good voice!
Love love love the Editors. I haven't heard a song of theirs I dislike. This particular song isn't one of their best, but it's still a pleasant song.

Voice just like Bruce Springsteen, except it's on pitch. ;-)

Accept the artist as he is. Making "Sounds Like" comparisons is trying to stuff him into another's box.
It never works very long or very well for either party.
Different generations, different career arch. Just enjoy each presentation or not based on your own taste at the time.

Will he cry at the very end? Sounds as it is very possible...
