I’m fine with high beef prices and less cows, especially given the water issues out west… and how much water cows require.
Politics has a bit to do with beef prices, notably high feed costs.  But mostly apolitical… due to drought and ranchers choosing to slaughter more cows than build their herd. And screwworm.

Waaaayy back in the good old days a beer was $2 and a lap dance was $10.  The $2 per was expensive then but it kept out the riff raff.

With inflation over 45 years, I guess a $10 beer is okay, but you don't get any entertainment at that price these days.

There is a lap dance/getting old/shrinkflation joke in there somewhere

What I can't quite get my arms around is that beer prices in a can/bottle haven't changed much, but God forbid you are drinking in a place where someone serves it to you.... it's $8-$10 (plus 30%).  To add to the misery, what used to be an extra $1 for a pint of a double IPA has turned into 10 oz or 12 oz pours for the same price as everything else (which has gone up in price).  Shrinkflation is real.

A few weeks ago, we were out in Philly at a brewery I really like.  It's the usual story of a cool place in an old building in a neighborhood I wouldn't have been caught dead in 25 years ago.  It was $34 for the first round (4 beers), and mine included an IPA  | 6.6% | $8 for 12 oz.  That's $10 with tip.  I can get a 4 pack of 16 oz cans to go for $18?  Paying 3X to sit on their stools and listen to their music just seems silly.  We grabbed 2 four-packs and headed out.

That same draft in a restaurant in Philly will cost you $12 (+tax and tip).

I think some of it is that people are drinking less, so profits are down on booze, so they are raising the prices.  That's the death spiral for any brewery or restaurant that isn't really good.

At the southern outpost, inflation has hit a lot of stuff pretty hard. A really good margarita ~ $10, but you can often find happy hour or specials that are as good as 2 for 1. Beer has been consistently reasonable. My goto is usually 65 pesos, up from 50 a couple years ago. The exchange rate has hit more than inflation. A fizzy lemonade is usually more than a beer. And you can often find specials on the beer too - usually 3/2 or something that makes you count buddies and wonder how much time you'll be at the place.  It's still cheaper at home, but not enough to worry about.  There are a couple of microbrews too, but they are pretty much full on US pricing. It's hard to spend $8-10 for a beer when it's $3 across the street.

It's definitely bust season for microbreweries. But there was also a time when on-site sales weren't where the money is... if the brewery's main market was retail stores, not the burgers and pizza restaurant business, then their taphouse prices are sometimes better.

A growler (4 pints) used to cost significantly less than 4 pints at the pub and for good reason: no canning/shipping/dishwashing expenses, just Here's the Beer Now Go Away. Lately though, if a pint is $7, the growler will be $25. Granted the pint at the bar is usually only 14 oz with spillage so you're getting something less but it's still way more than really good beer in convenient cans at the local store. I guess people pay it. I only get growlers if there's something on tap that they won't be bottling/canning.
