I learned at least as much outside the classroom as I did inside. Probably retained more of the outside stuff too... Some of it is on my permanent record.
I'm in a frickin' museum! Well, a gallery in the campus library at Cal Poly, but still... They used to have a big open house weekend every spring (until the riots), and I made a big sign for the weekend out of masonite. Spray-painted it black and made some metal straps to hang it from the parapet of our building. It was immediately a problem but I told Admin that it was just signage for our station for the open house and once I showed them that it wasn't permanently attached, they said okay. We conveniently left it up there and nobody said boo about it for DECADES. They even repainted the building—took the sign off, painted, re-hung the sign. None of us expected it to withstand the weather but when it finally was removed just a few years ago (I think the 1 had blown away), people were distraught. You could see it from a long way off and it was part of the landscape! Locals say you can still make out the outline in the faded wall paint. So Now the K is in a glass case along with a photo of me and an accomplice.
One of the station General Managers, Brian Hildebrand took time out of a busy day to meet with me and chat about the 40 year old station.
