There is a saying among libertarians: you're not a Real Libertarian until another libertarian has told you you aren't a Real Libertarian.

Rand Paul is a Republican. He's on the libertarian fringe of the Republican party but he's trying mightily to maintain his credibility (and influence, and viability) within that group. I can't tell which Rand Paul is the real one; he has done too many good things (against fierce opposition) to dismiss but done too much Trump toadying to embrace.

Movements are made of actual people, not archetypes. Real people are package deals, fallible and self-interested and subject to pressures and motivations those of us far away will never understand. He could take a harder, less-compromising line like his father did, or House members Thomas Massie and Justin Amash have, but look what that got them. Ron Paul built a movement that may one day prevail, but it cost him dearly and he won't live to see it come to fruition.

Amash left the Republican party and congress. He's doing great things for us but he isn't catapulting to stardom. Massie...well, I'll let him tell you about it.

One more final thought. 

There is some irony in this whole chain in that of the two Paul's, it is Ron who is more the real libertarian.  I am thinking that the couple of remaining libertarians still here at RP are not happy that Rand is being called a libertarian as he is not considered to be a real libertarian, by real libertarians.  Rand gives the brand a bad name and is an embarrassment and is usually used (as in the case here) to tarnish the brand.

No I don't know of his infamous votes against federal aid after disasters, except for the one for Hurricane Sandy, which in that case I agree with, and that is only because there was more pork in it than actual relief.

You can believe me or not.  I have not paid much attention to relief bills and the votes on them, again other than Sandy.  They almost always go through, complete with unrelated pork.  Got other more important things I pay attention to.

Regarding the bill he just blocked referenced below by haresfur, I disagree with his action on that, completely.  That makes him a putz (at the very least) in my book.

Back to you.

Oh, and RD is still a putz.  Maybe if he tried a little harder to say what he means when he is not rewriting headlines for his links it would help, but that will likely never happen, and there was no link attached to his statement like there usually is.  He causes his own problems.
