Paint by number morning sky looks so phony.
Dawn is breaking everywhere, light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains I don't care, 'cause it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

I see you've got your list out, say your peace and get out.
Yes I get the gist of it, but it's all right
Sorry that you feel that way, the only thing there is to say is...
Every silver lining's got a touch of grey.
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

It's a lesson to me, the Ables on the bakers and the c's
The abc's we all must face, try to keep a little grace

Chorus

It's a lesson to me,
The Delta's or the East and the freezes.
The abc's-- we all think of, and try to keep a little love.

I know the rent is in arrears
the dog has not been fed in years
it's even worse than it appears but, it's all right

Cow is giving kerosene, kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene, but it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

The shoe on the hand that fits, there's really nothin' much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit, 'cause it's all right
Oh well a touch of grey, kinda suits you anyway,
That is all I had to say, if it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

We will get by... X3 then fade
We will survive!

Saw some of the video clips for Dead and Co. at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Amazing graphics.
Grey is the color of ambiguity!
I'll never forget seeing the Dead at the Oakland Colosseum for their first show after Jerry's coma. Of course , they opened with Touch of Grey. Everyone lost their minds and I thought the roof was going to blow off. You could hardly hear the band during the first half of this song. A very memorable show for so many reasons. I miss Jerry.
Only Dead song I ever liked.
It is a great song. Love the arrangement and all the players are having a great time playing it.
I had a touch of grey years ago.  Now I have a touch of black in the beard and scalp.

That's me.  Never heard of them before this tune.  Not a Dead-head, but like some of their stuff.  They are definitely respectable as a musical force.  Just don't play Ripple, please.  ;)

I, too, have followed them from the beginning—in fact from the time they were The Warlocks, and regardless of what you think of its place in the greater canon of their work, this is a pretty cool song. Garcia's solo could serve as an object lesson to beginning guitarists on how to build your solo around the song's melody.

I miss Jerry as a creative force. No matter where he was, no matter the genre, he made things happen.

This is the song that introduced this GenXer to the Dead. My sister was a Deadhead, but I didn't hear much of the band until this arrived on MTV. * While I never rose to the level of Deadhead devotion, to this day I enjoy many of their albums and feel lucky I had the chance to see them live before Jerry passed.

*Edit - Apparently I already mentioned this below, apologies...
Ah, the 80's. Maybe not what most deadheads want to remember about the band. But this was the first song that introduced me to them, so the nostalgia is strong.

Oh man, what a great song.  Heard my young staff member singing along to this.  I strangely feel a sense of accomplishment getting her to like the dead:)

By the way, check out the War on Drugs cover of this, if you like this song that version will not disappoint.

Good tune! I am not a Dead fan, even though I have seen them live, 3 times in the early 70s.
Only dead song that sounds slightly better recorded than live. Full goose bumps on that lead every time. Was a tremendous help turning my wife into a rapid deadhead. So, yeah, fantastic song.

I'd have liked to hear this band rock out a bit more, like on Fire on the mountain (love jamming that with a mate)

Being a Deadhead who has listened to their music every single day for the past 27 years I have to say that this is one of the worst songs they ever recorded (though I did like the video). Oh, and Trebor, by the time you posted your comment the song was already over so I guess you didn't leave afterall

Being a non-Deadhead who changed the channel on the seemingly same 3 roboplay FM Dead songs, I have to say this is one of the best songs they ever recorded.
looks like they knew how to cover their noses in '87
Fantastic! Love it every time I hear it.

Thanks B&R!

Funny. I've said that many times about earlier Dead ditties.  Tracks like THIS would have made me more of a fan. It sounds like they were in tune and wry and sober.
This song proves you you don't need any talent to make it as a rock band.

Ha!  Overplayed as it is I have to admit that this was the first Dead song I ever really liked.  Not much of a fan I guess.  I also really liked the song Shakedown Street(!!) which is sacrilege to many Deadheads.
Well, it's better than Disco-Dead.

I disagree. For me, it's one of their better tunes. It's witty, doesn't meander, has a catchy melody and, unlike at least some of their live tracks, is actually in tune and key!

I'm only partially a fan of the greater GD catalog , appreciate them a lot, and personally I rate this an 8.

Oh man, back when MTV was relevant! This video, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Genesis' Land of Confusion... The 80s gave us quite a few gems. Some of them don't hold up without nostalgia-goggles (Dire Straits' Money for Nothing, I'm looking at you) but I love them all the same.

Definitely not my favourite, but it was always fun to dance to.
Worst dead song ever
Those high harmonies are spot on.
The song that connected the Dead  to non boomers and non Deadheads before the end, so kinda poignant.
Love this song and the video, of course {#Cheesygrin}
Somebody really needs to feed the dog, though.
The previous Radiators's song, from a band I really known nothing about, called to mind the Dead, then this comes on. Not the selection I would choose, but something of the vibe must be connecting across the ether. And, no, I must object to calling this the worst Dead song ever. They did worse, but although this was a bit out of their groove (or rut, depending on when in the 90s one is referring to), it's pretty good.
Bah.  One hit wonders.

Agree
This is probably the first Dead song I ever heard.  I was a young child and it was on commercial radio.  I remember being slightly freaked out by the band's name.  Not until years later would I find my self dancing like a lunatic, looking for a miracle, dining on the finest dirty hippie parking lot fare, and enjoying the hell out of myself in the final years of the Dead's tours.  I had a great time at many shows and feel blessed to have enjoyed it before Jerry was gone.  "Grateful Dead!" is now a joyful phrase and this song is the perfect exclamation point.

I'll have to check it out...with an open mind of course.  I'm glad the GD bring so much joy to so many people. That, to me, is what music is all about.  Not a hater, I just don't prefer them.

Ho man, you really hit the nail with this one WonderLizard!

I actually Love this song for what it represents (Jerry coming back for Round 2). And I totally dig the guitar solo. Wiht the comment above, I now have a handle with which to listen to it, building around the melody. Perfect.

And yes, there is a Lion in that man.

This is the only Dead song I could name off the top of my head and probably only if heard it playing.  Never could get into the Dead...at all and this is probably the one and only song I ever liked (not so much anymore because of the massive overplay in the summer of 87).

Cracks me up how much negativity this song seems to attract from some...  I happen to *love* it, so thanks for playing!
GAAAH! I am actually tempted to make an exception to my "no song should be rated Sucko-Barfo" policy for this song.

I loved this song before its commercial release. Of course I went through the anathema phase with it as well. Now I've learned to distinguish the song I like from the phase of the Dead's history that I could have done without.

That extra song is "My Brother Esau" which was the B side of the single "Touch of Grey",. It's a great song but you're right it's probably not worth the extra $24. I still have that single somewhere, I wonder if its worth something...

I remember this video from my childhood, and I still love the song. I was probably four years old at the time, but it's funny how these things make an impact. I remember the skeletons playing, and being freaked out by them, but still loving the music. Is it sad that one of my early memories is of MTV? It's my generation, I guess-- although MTV these days is awful. I also remember a video that was mostly claymation being played quite a bit at that time, and loving that too.

the catchy rhythm and chorus of this song make it wonderful, whatever its weaknesses may be -- you go, Mickey Hart!
Great lyrics, nice melody, and a really pleasent spirit that is let down a little by those typically weak Dead vocals. Has anyone ever covered this song?

I have never seen the use of the word \"pop\" as a dirty word so much as on RP. There is nothing wrong with pop in essence. It just means the music/lyrics appeal to wide segment of society and, as far as I can tell, that\'s a novel idea -- inclusiveness. That being said, I will never be a fan of any Dead work, but much of it is tolerable (ah, tolerance -- also inclusive).

I agree with you. Though I am happy they did have some mainstream success. It was a good thing when pukey top 40 dj's announced "and now here is the latest from the Grateful Dead"... ;)
One of my anthems! What a great song. Whenever the troubles of life get me down, this song never fails to put things into perspective. I will get by. I will survive. Thanks, Bill.
\"Its a lesson to me\" \"Any scenes we all think up to try to win a little love\" Keep Jerry playing! It is SO great to hear him/them. Sure they played this on commercial radio. And didnt YOU all like it when they did!
So when Jerry died, a deadhead died on the same day. Sadly, they both found themselves on the way to Hell. But at the gates of Hell, the Devil granted them each a final request. So Jerry said, "I'd like to play 'Touch of Grey' just one final time." The Devil turned to the deadhead and said, "What about you?". The deadhead replied, "I'll just go on down now."
The Grateful Dead never where as big (leave alone the sort of institute they where in the States) in the Netherlands (the rest of the world?), so this one is far from being overplayed to me. Nice to hear the Dead in this pop orientated way and notice they remained truthful to themselves.

Granted, this song has been beaten nearly to death by mainstream radio, but its still a fine example of the excellent musicianship of the Dead. The second and final time I saw them they opened with this song. That was a year before Jerry died.
