Hard to tell what is wrong with so many listeners that they call this boring and move on, to what I cannot guess. Heard it too many times as the theme to The World from PRI? I recently got the CD out and played it loud. This particular song really is NOT boring. Repetition, if you have never noticed, is one of the features of music. How it is handled makes the difference, and this piece works. Maybe hearing it too many times in the background on a news program dulls the senses, but it deserves a real listen.

With its stuttering guitar rhythms repeated over a single chord, half-spoken vocals and lively bursts of energy, his music reminded some of the Mississippi blues styles of John Lee Hooker and R.L. Burnside. In fact, when Mr. Toure first heard a Hooker recording in the 1960s, he thought he was hearing a form of Malian music. He once performed with Hooker in concert but always took pains to point out the differences between his music and that of his American counterparts. "I am the root," he said. "They are the branches." ... "In what you call the blues, I have heard people singing of their hardships," Mr. Toure said, "but to me this is a very small thing to tell people of; it has no great significance." His own songs tended to be about love, spiritual life and the land and rivers of Mali. He sang in nine African languages, always keeping the musical idioms of each style distinct. "My music is an education, a history, a legend, an autobiography -- it all tells a valuable story of something true," he said. "Different songs are inspired by different ethnic groups. . . . Often if you try and sing a song in a different language, it will not work."

MORE RY COODER! RY RADIO! ALL RY ALL THE TIME ! That would be fine with me! Few guitarists, or even musicologists have explored as many different genres of music as Mr. Cooder, and he's mastered each of them, depending on where he was at that point in his life. The guy's one of the world's best guitarists, both spiritually and technically, and far under-recognized in my book. He was one of the first guitarists who introduced me to the joy of delta blues and bottleneck slide guitar. Got any of that, Bill?

I don't know tv programs, but I also have the original album with the original songs, without Ry Cooder. So most songs on this cd are covers, or new versions...mighty good though!
